Fortuner Dvd

Featured Replies

I have a Fortuner with Navi and DVD player. You are unable to watch a DVD while in motion for obvious safety reasons. However, it would be nice if the passenger could watch something while on a long trip.

Any quick fixes to disable this feature or does it need to have some kind of switch fitted breaking the connection that tells the DVD player the car is moving?

Thanks.

If you find out let me know. Just got one (Fortuner). I;m presuming it's on the handbrake mechanism on mine, so maybe I will get down under the motor and look for it this weekend.

After a little more research it looks like it is a speed pulse input to the unit and in order to "trick" the unit into thinking that the car is stationary you need to add a little bit electronics that pulse at a particular (stopped) frequency that is not as simple as cutting a wire or putting a switch in.

Apparently on earlier versions of firmware / software this could be disabled through a hidden service menu but from 2007 models and onwards this function has been removed and even applies to changing your destination on the Navi whilst in motion.

Think Toyota got it right, there are enough people who would drive and watch a movie now they cant and the road is a bit safer.

:) Yes Dad.

Keep your eyes on the road. Hire a driver if you want to watch tv.

How would that help, the passenger can't watch DVD's whilst the car is in motion either...

There's a ceiling mounted video display that fits for the rear seated passengers that I've seen fitted in Fortuners? Sorry but I'm with Toyota on this one, anyone driving with a TV on in the front is asking for trouble.

I would not mind if you kill yourself while watching a movie in a car, the problem is that usually you take a few innocent people with you. Cars are dangerous in the hand of the wrong people.

So id agree you should be able to watch that movie while driving if it was sure that the only one who was going to get hurt was you.

You people obviously have not seen the cr@p my wife would play on a DVD screen - if you think I would be watching it!! I think the OP also clearly stated it was for his passengers.

It would be a toss-up to decide which would be more distracting - a horrible Thai VCD or the normal Isaan banter (complete with those high pitched interjections) that fly about the vehicle when the family are on board and not distracted by being able to watch a video

Passengers who want to watch DVD's should only do so behind the driver, not sat next to the driver. Too much distraction and worse so after dark. Toyota has got it right.
