Three Chinese, one Taiwanese nabbed on swindling charges

BANGKOK, Nov 8 (TNA) -- Thai police have arrested three Chinese men and a Taiwanese woman at a Bangkok apartment and charged them with swindling some Bt30 million from Chinese and Taiwan nationals living in their own countries, police said.

The four, led by 25-year-old Jin Wei, were apprehended at a Sukhumvit Road apartment on Friday after police searched their room. Police said they seized 21 cell phones, 44 flash drives, six computer notebooks, more than Bt190,000 and 25,100 yuan allegedly in their possession.

The arrests were made after Taiwan police requested their Thai counterparts to arrest the four for using Thailand as a base in allegedly carrying out swindles by telephoning the victims to transfer funds via e-banking.

According to police, the four telephoned their victims in China and Taiwan and claimed that they were either prosecutors, finance ministry officials or police officers and told the victims that their bank accounts would be closed as they had transferred unusual amounts of money from their countries.

Police said the victims would be asked to transfer money to new accounts via the e-banking system if they did not wish to see their bank accounts closed. Once the money is received, it would be transferred to the swindlers’ accomplices who are Thais.

Police said they are looking for others joining the gang. (TNA)
