A fascinating report on Moscow's stray dog ecosystem.

My dog "Lucky" is almost identical to "Malchik", the stray dog that was murdered by a Russian 22-year-old model in the story. For some strange reason, local (Koh Pha-Ngan) Thais don't like Lucky as well, and have tried to seriously stone him several times - maybe he'd be better off in Moscow!

I've noticed that Russian travelers seem to have an above-average kinship with stray dogs. We need more Russian visitors in Thailand. :)

Probably the most famous of all Russian stray dogs was Laika, the first (and last?) space cosmodog.

And perhaps the most famous of all is Hachiko - whose inspirational true story is a reminder to mankind of its best friend's unmatched loyalty & devotion.

Great read and a very interesting topic given the issues faced in many areas of LOS in regard to unwanted street dogs. Not too sure about our canine friends riding the BTS in Bangers though heh

Thanks for posting the link Jose.

Our dog "Lilly" was left behind at the car ferry pier on Koh Pha-Ngan when she was young. The food sellers there told us that often she would board the early morning ferry to Suratthani, and come back on the return trip. They told us she was looking for her owner.

Lilly stayed put at that barren & hot pier for almost a year, until the time she had her puppies and had to move them to a safer location. She now has her own home.

The untold sad story about the stray dog population is that in order for it to remain at a stable level, 90-97% of pups must die before they reach 1 year of age.

From the early happiest moments playing with their siblings and feeling safe with their mum, to the desperate final moment when (with their last of their strength) they move to a quiet place to die, along the way there is much suffering.

A dog's life in Thailand is mostly a sad one.
