He was a good bloke, but I thought it was Winston :) who was actually a member of the Conservative Party at the age of 25 and a member of the Liberal Party at age 35.

How so?

Just me having a quiet chuckle Z', whilst picking up on the spelling, I was really highlighting the ambiguity of the quote attributed to W.C.

As for him being a good guy, I guess the jury is out depending on your point of view and that is a thread all of its own.
