I'm lookibng at late s/h cars and now am getting paranoid about buying one that has finance on it - how can I make sure it hasn't?

Is tthis in fact a problem, does the loan stay with the person or follow the car?

Ask for the blue book. If it's under financing (oan) the bank or financial institution would hold it until it's cleared.

The blue book will also indicate who is the owner, hope you can read Thai (or bring a trusted Thai friend).

Sometimes the blue book can be provided when still under finance.

Read the book (in thai). It states if the owner is a finance company or the person you are dealing with. If you cant read thai, compare id card number for the person you are dealing with, with the id card number for last owner in blue book.

Edit. Bad advice, comparing last owners id number is not sufficient. Its more complicated.

If its financed, the finance company is listed as owner and the person leasing it is too. When debts are cleared the book is transfered to the person leasing it only. IOW this person id card number or passport number appears twice.

I have had 3 cars here, in both cases where the car was financed I only had a copy of the blue book, the finance company held the actual book.

Yep, the Finance Company keeps the Book as long as the credit and interest hasn't been repaid in full!

There will be a copy only!

Several ways to have the book while still on finance

1. Buy the car in BKK on finance and register yourself in Phuket. Keep the book. Done it. 2 names in book, finance and my.

2. Need the book for a change, like canopy on pickup bed, or change color. Pay a fee to finance company to have the book, make the change in LTD and book.
