I just came back from Mai Sai today. No problem about "dodgy" stamps, even though it's been quite some time since I've had to visit there. In fact, they have built a whole new immigration building at the border with mirrored glass in front of the immigration guy's faces, so it's very difficult to tell what they are doing back there, but it did seem to take a little longer than in the past and they made me provide a phone number, which they've never done before, but I got the magic stamp, no problem. However, at the main immigration building on the way into town, it seemed like business as usual, and they were quite friendly. I didn't have to make copies of my passport, although it looked like if you were on the 30 day system, you might have to. The big scare seems to be a thing of the past.
