The Escape is an SUV the Fortuner is a modified pick-up truck.

Differences in engine size are likely to be related to tax issues. there is also a Masda version of the same vehicle (Tribute)

Check out the yearly tax on each model (all engine sizes) there may be a huge difference.

there is I believe a 2wd fortuner in the offing....depends on what you want to do really?

I have a 2.7 fortuner and am very happy with it so far. Paid 1.1 for it from Andy's expat motors. Very nice to deal with threw in a few options free. I'm happy
