I'm an American and I like to visit Thailand for two weeks. Do I need a visa? Any nice hotels that you are aware of that would cost around $50.00 a night?

As an American Citizen you qualify under the 30-Day Visa Exemption rule and therefore no need to apply for any visa at the Thai Embassy abroad. You will receive a 30 day visa exemption stamp (15 days at land borders) at the Airport. If you need a few more days then just 30 days, extend this 30-day visa exemption stamp at the Immigration Office in Bangkok for 7 days (costs THB 1,900) If you apply for the 7 day extension, take with you an itinerary or proof of on-going travel as the Immigration nowadays asks this from time to time.
