Deposed Thai premier spotted in Montenegro: reports

PODGORICA (AFP) -- Former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, on the run from corruption charges, was spotted in the Montenegrin town of Budva this weekend, a local TV station reported Monday.

Thaksin was seen in coastal Budva's medieval old town on Sunday, enjoying coffee and cakes in one of the area's posh hotel with his entourage, TV Vijesti reported, quoting witnesses.

Police refused to comment the reports.

According to press reports Thaksin, a former telecoms tycoon, has a Montenegrin passport but so far officials in this former Yugoslav republic have refused to confirm if he has been given citizenship.

The populist former prime minister was ousted in a 2006, and has been living abroad, mostly in Dubai, to avoid a jail term for corruption.

In Thailand on Monday the current government rejected and ultimatum by tens of thousands of pro-Thaksin protesters who demand immediate elections.

Prime Minister Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the rest of the government and the top military brass have taken refuge in military barracks amid fears that the so-far peaceful demonstration by "Red Shirt" supporters of Thaksin could turn violent.

Typical Thaksin. And he says that the current government are a bunch of elites? I wish the video or photo of this could be broadcast on the red's stage. It would be good to show them who their brave leader is, while they sacrifice their own blood at his altar.

Hmmm quite amusing that reports have him many diff places... just shows Thai govt hasn't got a fking clue where he is so they throw out BS and hope it sticks.

I don't think the government had anything to do with this one.

They got enough egg with the "He's in Cambodia / No he's not" reports from the FM.

Another bit of news showing how hypocritical and heartless Thaksin is towards Thai people. While they sweat and bleed for his billions, he eats cake. Not like we haven't seen it before!

Vice Foreign Minister Panich Vikitsreth said Thailand has no embassy in Montenegro so it assigned its embassy in Pudapest to check the reports.

He was responding to a news report by TV Vijesti of Montenegro who reported that Thaksin was seen in coastal Budva's medieval old town on Sunday. He enjoyed sipping coffee and cakes in one of the area's posh hotel with his entourage.

Thaksin is believed to have a Montenegrin passport but it has not yet known whether he has been given citizenship.
