English Vocabulary

Featured Replies

So often on TV I find myself lacking in vocabulary - I can't seem to find the right word for what I am trying to say.

Perhaps one of our English teaching colleagues could help out.

For example, what is the correct word for someone that likes to show off their education by using pompous and nbombastic obscure words?

What is the correct word for a post that epitomises the very defect that it is trying to describe or criticise?

Perhaps some of the posters who like to use more salty language could post queries on more appropriate and appropriate insults and terms of abuse, rather than resorting to irrelevant obscenities.

I do hope that other posters will use this thread to help us all improve

Buy a thesaurus and a good dictionary. You can always use the free dictionary on Wickapedia, but a thesaurus is often more valuable for not repeating the same adjectives all the time. A small book on synonyms and antonyms is also a good investment. If you are unsure of a proper spelling then have a WORD document open at the same time you are typing.

There are many words that sound the same, but have a different meaning. Examples are the common mistakes when using: your and you're. People very often confuse: lose and loose.

Many mistakes are just typos, but very often, people just don't know the difference. I often make typos and only catch it when proof reading later.
