Has anybody been on a daytrip to Aythaya from Bangkok? How long does it take on the boat to get there and how long by coach?

Also do you have plenty of time to go sightseeing when you are there? I'm trying to figure out if it is worth going over there for just the day.

Thanks very much :o

Hi Did it a few weeks ago well worth the trip the ruined temples are amazing and a trip along the river is also great fun. We treated ourselves as there was 3 of us we hired the hotels limo for the day with a driver who also acted as a fantastic tour guide. He took us everywhere and showed us all the best bits. Cost us around 7000 baht for the day which between 3 of us was great value. Took about 90 minutes or so to get there from Bangkok. Go its worth a visit! :o

If you are taking a boat cruise to Ayutthaya you'll be spending almost half a day on the boat, so it doesn't give you "plenty of time" in Ayutthaya, especially if you want to see the Bang Pa-in Palace as well. And yes, on a coach it's about 90 minutes drive to Bangkok.

Thanks very much!! Will definately go :o

Can I just get an ordinary bus to take me there because all of the trips I see advertised ,They are all going by boat and back by bus.

So if you tell me I won't have enough time there if I go by boat then its probably better to just get there and back by coach!

Yes, just go to Mor Chit bus station and climb on one of the regular buses there. It will be a lot cheaper in the region of 100B.

Excellent! And will thatt one take about 90 min aswell?

You can also take a train from Hua Lamphong station to Ayutthaya. I believe Ayutthaya train station is closer to the historical park than from bus station there. Trains to Ayutthaya leaves from Hua Lamphong every hour, and with the subway, access to Hua Lamphong is much easier than to Mor Chit, if you're staying in city center.

But if you are going there for sight seeing it would be much easier for you to just have the travel agency arrange you a van/driver as you will need a car to get around in Ayutthaya (you can rent bike there though). Normally they would require minimum two person for a tour like that.

Anyway I would still recommend a boat cruise for outward (or inward) jouney. Whether or not you have "plenty of time" to see Ayutthaya really depends on how much you want to see. Normally on a boat cuirse tour, they will take you to around 4 major landmarks in Ayutthaya. If you want to see Bang Pa-In palace too, better take the van and forget the cruise.

The coach fare is 40B ish and the train fare even less. 7000B for the hotel limo sounds like a massive scandal! You could even have got a BKK cab for a fraction of that!

Its well worth an overnight visit and even an if for nothing else having a few sundowners in one of the bars opposite Wat Ratburana.

Try to avoid taking a tuk tuk for the day when in Ayutthya as they are a total rip off often charging upward of 1000B to those not in the know. Its easy enough (and far more pleasant IMHO) to get around the central ruins on foot or bike and maybe then take a tuk tuk to some of the outlying sights like Wat Yai.

To take a boat trip ask at your Guesthouse or try a wander around the river and have an ask. Count on 3-500B for a 2 hr ish circuit of the inner island (which should include a few stops if you want them) Between 5 - 7 is a great time for a river trip.

My brother paid a Bangkok cabbie a thousand baht for the day to take him up there and back, plus numerous stops around the city. I would never pay 7000B, that's scandalous

I went to Auyutthaha a few years back by train from Hualomphong sation. About 20 baht or so 3rd class and an hour's journey.

Once there, you can also hire push bikes for the day to get around the various wats.

Come on guys! just under 35 quid each for a day out with a guide and being driven in a nice new merc is hardly scandalous in fact it worked out cheaper than going on an organised tour for 3 of us. Some of you guys are tight!! :o
