Why?

Featured Replies

Why does every Thai person I know complain about the heat every year? Its the same heat and yet my MIL says, every year, without fail, "Oh its soo hot!"

Yes,indeed. And it was hot last year, it will be hot next year.

And its been hot every year for the 75 years she's been alive.

Course, same goes for the Brits who complain about the rain.

Why is that?

(feel free to post your own questions as well :))

It's not so much the complaining that gets to me - it's the insistence that the air-conditioners are turned on all the time and bring the room down to a walk-in freezer level.

If you are out in the sticks, there is no a/c, so you live/work in the shade where possible and make the best of it with several showers a day.

But city-dwellers (local) want temperatures that have never before been experienced in these latitudes.

If it was really hot, say 45C, then I could understand it. But 30-35C is nothing extraordinary.

If you boil it down it's just about saying something, anything. Almost making conversation, but maybe not quite. Saying something for the sake of saying something.

It's like saying you're puffed at the end of a marathon; well, yeah. But people still say it.

We can't all be rational all of the time, :)

Or perhaps an invite for the listener to start a meaningful conversation as no subject comes to mind for the hot person.

It'll be sociological, not rational, is my guess.

Ohhhh,,,.....I just realised, perhaps you were just starting a topic and not looking for an answer. Why do people do that?

:)

dont forget about the Expats !,

Excellent point, HB. The airconditioned bars dotted around Patong would probably do a far better business if they just didn't have their air turned down so cold. I refuse to go into them. It's an interesting contrast with (alpine) ski lodges, with the temperature always set uncomfortably warm.

But as to the OP, the same thing happens in Oz. You get the same people who complain about how miserable it is in winter whingeing about it being far too hot in summer. I'll admit I'm not a fan of the cold myself, but I avoid it. Apart from Bangkok (which somehow seems to trap the heat like a furnace), you'll not hear me complaining about the heat in Thailand.

Why do people in the UK heat their houses during winter to temperatures than have them moaning "it's soooo 'ot" in the summer.

I always laugh when I hear Europeans moaning about the heat in Thailand, or wherever. Are these people brain dead? Even if their as thick as a brick even the Sun newspaper carries weather figures from around the world. So all they've got to do is check out the climate of the place their going to.

But Harcourt is right, it's just something to say but as for moaning about the rain in the UK, I'm right with them on that. :)

Why do they have windscreen wipers on driverless trains?

What answer would you accept?

Good one Phil!

Why is a boxing ring square?

Why is there always like 1100ml's in the refill pack when the original container is only 1000ml's? Bloody bean counters are banking on you spilling & wasting the extra 100ml's and thereby increase sales for the company. :)

Why is a boxing ring square?

In the days of bare knuckle boxing, spectators would crowd around into a ring whilst betting and roaring.

But I guess the question was rhetorical :)

why is it always that hot in Thailand? :)

Global Warming Naam and it's happening bluddy fast. Do you know there was snow on tyhe ground when I left the UK by the time I'd got to Bangkok it was gone. :)

Why is 7/11 not called 24/7?. (And why do Thais have no idea what you are talking about if you call it jet sip et?)

Firstly because you're saying "seventy one"

But mainly because it's "seven eleven". "Seh Ven Ee Leh Ven". Period. Phonetic, not related to numbers.

The Thais I know do not seem to be able to think outside the very small square.

I once tried to explain how a cryptic crossword is done.......a lesson in futility that resulted in me looking like a crazy wierdo.

Japanese like pun, though, and I believe Thai do too (try asking a girl for an onion)......an appreciation of pun would give a person some base for understanding transliterated "pun", I would have thought. But alas, no.

Why have non-americans taken to calling September the 11th, '9-11'

Since when do British, or Europeans for that matter, put the month first?

On that note, why have we accepted that we universally understand what somebody is talking about when they say "Nine-Eleven"

I'm really looking forward to turning 31 on "Twelve-Seven"

Why is "Rain" not older by ten years. ...and married to me? :)

9-11 to me is ninth of November - and always will be.

I constantly work with Americans, Europeans and local engineers and admin people who are taught in various ways. Also spent many years working for Scandinavian companies, where the year comes first.

So now I insist that all parties write the month in letters, not numbers. Has solved all problems. (Except for one Japanese supplier, who has Thai engineers - who have no concept of using anything but numbers for the months. Why??).

555 Hadn't thought of that! :)

Why don't we quote the year according to the age of the Earth rather than in relation to some religious bod?

Then it would be the year 4,540,000,000 (+/- 1%), now that really would screw up those little boxes on your arrivals form.

^Why not? After all, we've got to contend with the Thais being 543 years ahead of the rest of us...

Sensible Bear.

DD/MM/YYYY.

Only sensible way.

Septic Tanks, have stuffed up the English language, just laziness, now going illogica with dates.

I guess summun will say it has sumfin to do with computer language.........SHEEEEEESH.

Next thing, they will want to change The Prime Meridian and its opposite the 180th meridian (at 180° longitude), which the International Date Line generally follows, form a great circle that divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

To WASHINGTON......... <deleted>.

Mind boggles at the new International Date Line if that occcurs, not likely, but the septic tanks are liable to try anything to suit them.

Imagine, China will become, The West..... and America Middle East..... love the thought.

Now I go kip and dream it.......hehe

Why does every thread turn into bashing some person, gender, sexual orientation or nationality? Why is everyone such a negative PIA?

Ah, but YOU made a mistake with that statement. Not EVERYONE is negative. I'm seldom negative... if ever. And, that seems to piss some people off. I don't bash gender, sexual orientation or nationality. Stating a truth is NOT bashing. It's just stating a fact. Some people can't accept the facts. There is a big difference between rationally taking an opposing view on a subject, and debating it with logic, and outright bashing the opposing point of view without backing it up with facts.
