Does it seem like an awful lot of quakes this year are in the 7 mag range?

I have lived through one quake of a 7 magnitude with a duration of just under 1 minute.

It is not something I would ever want to experience again. Very surreal

I guess China was lucky it was in a more remote area than the 2008 quake.

Yes, it does.

I bet right now Al Gore is busy consulting with any "scientists" still talking to him trying to find a connection between the earthquakes and his inconvenient truth.

Or maybe it's due to the testing of the latest underground, building-destroying, radiation-free, mini-nukes.

Perhaps it is just more noticed because it has been happening in populated areas more so than before?

Because after checking it does not appear to be more than usual...

They said the same thing about hurricanes in the US. Big hurricanes that hit Florida 40-50 years ago did less damage because there was a lot less around to damage back then. If you keep building in the path of a hurricane or in earthquake zones eventually your luck will run out.

Ice cap thaw may awaken Icelandic volcanoes

OSLO (Reuters) – A thaw of Iceland's ice caps in coming decades caused by climate change may trigger more volcanic eruptions by removing a vast weight and freeing magma from deep below ground, scientists said on Friday.

They said there was no sign that the current eruption from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier that has paralysed flights over northern Europe was linked to global warming. The glacier is too small and light to affect local geology.

"Our work suggests that eventually there will be either somewhat larger eruptions or more frequent eruptions in Iceland in coming decades," said Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a vulcanologist at the University of Iceland.

"Global warming melts ice and this can influence magmatic systems," he told Reuters. The end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago coincided with a surge in volcanic activity in Iceland, apparently because huge ice caps thinned and the land rose.

"We believe the reduction of ice has not been important in triggering this latest eruption," he said of Eyjafjallajokull. "The eruption is happening under a relatively small ice cap."

The global warming/earthquake connection was theorised a few years ago. It does make some, albeit astounding, sense.

Consider that things will stay the same untill something changes....a house will remain standing until rot and termites weaken the structure. One last straw will break the camel's back.

Tectonic plates could indeed rise faster if the weight upon them changes. It only takes a small change in weight to tip the scales when the scales are delicately balanced.

Perhaps an underground nuclear explosion could trigger a seismic event if the tectonic plates are on the verge of shifting.
