debcoff
Hi. I'm moving from Abu Dhabi, UAE to Bangkok in August. I was thinking about bringing my Panasonic LCD flat screen tv with me. I'll use if for dvd's, paid downloads, etc. Getting the news might be good too. Is there any reason why I shouldn't bring it? The voltage and plugs are the same. Not sure if there is a duty fee. I am bringing everything allowed through the work visa. But, I understand I will pay a vat based on market cost on my computer, even though it is 3yrs old. Will there be a tax like this on all electronics? Please help.
astral
Once you have your work permit you are allowed duty free import of your household goods, computer included. You will have 6 months to do the import after arrival. Whether it is worth bringing the TV is debatable. Technology has moved fast in the last year and prices have tumbled. A depends on the volume you are bringing, versus cost and of course the quality of the TV you own. If the TV is just another item in a shipping container then it is probably worth it, but another box in a smaller load, may not be.
