BMA puts green agenda on show

BANGKOK: -- In something of a rarity, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has joined an environmental exposition to showcase its plans to make Bangkok more liveable.

“We want to let the public know about our plans for water treatment and garbage disposal,” said Bangkok City Clerk Khunying Nathanon Thavisin.

She said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) would be represented at Entec Pollutech Asia 2005, and would show off its policies and publicise its achievements in the area of environmental preservation. The exhibition began yesterday and continues until Friday at Bitec.

The BMA’s environmental policy, dubbed “Bangkok Agenda 21”, is based on a comprehensive action plan to be taken on by global, national and local organisations under the watchful eye of the United Nations, governments, and major groups in every area in which humanity has an impact on the environment.

Nathanon said the programme was aimed at making the city more liveable thanks to a sound system of urban planning that ensured its development was sustainable. “This is a cause truly worthwhile for everyone,” she said.

The expo would also stand as

testament to Thailand’s ability to host such environmental trade shows, she said, and it would draw large numbers of foreign businesspeople to the Kingdom.

Seminars are scheduled, with speakers from various agencies and groups, such as the Environmental Engineering Association of Thailand, non-governmental organisations and the Environment and the Community Development Association, better known as “Magic Eyes”.

I only hope that this should be the start of something good for Bangkok and Thailand. If Thai people started a movement to preserve and protect the environment it would be awesome. Thailand is such a beautiful place inspite of how badly the environment is treated that it would be absolutely awesome if the environment were handled well.
