Hi everybody,

I have obtained a Single entry ED visa at Vientiane Embassy and I have entered Thailand on May 6th, therefore the visa is valid until August 4th and I will have to apply for an extension before then.

Question:

-I need to go out of the country for 4 weeks, I would be back before August 4th (before the first 90 days single entry ED expires). Can I obtain a re-entry permit? Or is it only issued after the first extension is obtained? (It wouldn't make much sense but I've seen so many things that don't make sense when it comes to immigration rules, and not only in Thailand!)

Minor doubts:

-I am living in Bangkok, Khet Jatujak. Can I only go to Cheng Wattana or is there some One spot place (not sure how they are called) near my place?

-I heard that multiple re-entry permits are issues as well. Can a multiple re-entry permit be use over different extensions or does it expire with the current extension?

-Any other hints and tips? Do they make problems at the counter, ask funny questions, etc.?

Thanks for your help.

Re Entry Permit is valid for the length of your current stay.

1,000 Baht and a Passport size photo. It will keep your date of Aug 4th alive it will not add days.

A Multi would be of no use as it would only be valid until Aug 4th.

If you are going to be gone for 4 weeks has school told you they will have paperwork available to extend your stay? If not you might be better getting a new visa while absent.

Thanks guys.

@Litebeer: I understand that a re-entry permit is issued also on the first 90 days, not only after the first extension is obtained, is that right?

@lopburi: It's something that came up last minute. As far as I know the school was getting ready to issue the papers for the extension anyway, they've already got copies of my passport and they should be contacting the Ministry, if I'm not mistaken. I'll confirm with them tonight, but I'd like to get my re-entry permit this morning first.

If I understand correctly, once I'm back on July 15th I should have time until Aug 4th to extend, is that correct?

Any time before expiration is good for extension of stay but best to go early in case there is need for other paperwork.

A re-entry permit can be issued for any permitted to stay stamp - it does not have to be an extension of stay.

@Lopburi: thanks a lot!

I'll go to Cheng Wattana and get my re-entry permit. This evening I'll make sure the school get the papers ready by the time I'm back.
