Uk Tax Advice For Expats In Thailand - Help Needed

Featured Replies

At first blush this may seem like the wrong place to be enquiring about this, however, having experienced blank faces from several UK accountants, where better to get advice about tax in the UK for Expats living in Thailand, other than from Expats themselves?

I need professional, practical advice about UK tax: I'm prepared to pay for it but can't afford the big international firms and 'practical experience' is an absolute must. The advice I need has nothing to do with investments and purely potential liability to UK income tax. Obviously someone here in Thailand would be better so we can face to face but someone appropriately experienced in the UK would work also.

Just to make it very clear, I am not enquiring about tax evasion; merely how I should approach and best present my case legally to the UK tax authorities. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Many thanks.

You can try the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales : and search the database for accountants who specialise in the tax affairs of UK residents overseas, over 19,000 to choose from. www.icaewfirms.co.uk

I don't want to sound sarcastic, but far from being 'obvious' it's actually highly questionable whether 'someone in Thailand would be better', my personal experience is no, actually, they wouldn't. Try Grant Thornton : they can advise on international tax issues, though some online information. www.grant-thornton.co.uk

Thanks aussiebebe. I may have to resort to this but I am trying to avoid the bigger firms for expense reasons. I am familiar to some extent with Grant Thornton. I already have an accounting firm in the UK who have handled my business affairs, unfortunately, they are not tuned in to some of the finer aspects of the tax law relating to expats. That's why I was hoping to catch a firm that already has that experience - if they are local it would help somewhat so I'm keeping my fingers crossed still for a positive recommendation.
