Cop Shows

Featured Replies

Recently on a trip back to the UK, I noticed how many murder mystery, thriller, detective, legal, police based shows there are on tv. Ranging from the sedate, civilised Miss Marple to the hard-hitting Shield.

This genre seems to be entirely absent from Thai TV. There is a show relating amusing anecdotes from the policeman's blotter but it is more like a farcical version of That's Life from the perspective of the Thai plod on the beat. I think it's called "Kadi det" but I can't remember.

I wonder why nobody produces any such shows.

coz they usually show the real thing on the news ;)

how often in the western media do you get suspects paraded in front of the cameras with their drugs, money, guns & mobiles displayed night after night

and also murder scenes, sometimes with the bodies pixelated.

You didn't mention the best cop show ever. The Wire.

The reasons why Thai television doesn't have such shows are simple:

1] They can't afford them.

2] Such shows may cause people to actually think, which in turn would be very bad for the 'elite' who run this country.

Yeah, what we need is a Thai version of 'The Sweeney'.

Brilliant idea.

"Oi Somchai, getcha sandals on, we're off.

Some nonce just blagged a knockin' shop on Nana"

"But Guv I haven't finished me milky ice tea"

"SHUT IT!!!"

We'll have one soon as they figure out how to weave a midget, an autistic person and a luk-khreung mia noi in to one plot. ;)

It's not only Cop shows that are absent. They don't really have any kind of drama at all do they?

It's because men dressing up as women and people hitting each other on head is so much more entertaining.

In Brazil there are these kiddie-type game shows on TV all the time (throw the ball through the hoop, collect all the teddy bears, etc) and everyone loves them. Go figure. But on the positive side, the Saturday morning kiddie shows have some excellent adult female talent in very skimpy costumes; I'm sure there's many a dad who enjoys spending his weekends in front of the TV with the kids.

I know I did.

somehow i think a thai version of "the thin blue line" would be more fitting.

Read my opening post.

Could it be that the reality of the Thai police does not bear scrutiny?
