Cleaners For Turkish Rugs In Bangkok Or Pattaya

My kilim is filthy!

My maid lady wants to clean it, she wants to stick it in a washing machine I think. That will kill it. I also have read that dry cleaning kilims is a big no no, they can't take those strong chemicals.

Reading some websites, there seems to be a consensus that using a hand cleaning method using fresh olive oil soap is the time tested Turkish method. Fresh olive oil soap in Thailand? Yeah, right.

Anyway, does anyone know of a commercial rug cleaner in Bangkok or Pattaya (preferably Pattaya) that might know what they are doing with a kilim?

Otherwise, I may just have to trash it and that's a shame.

Hand washing is the done thing. I have a dozen oriental carpets given me by my grandmother, some are nearly 100 years old and have always been washed by hand. I do it myself, it's easy using a cold water soap, a hose and a brush. The trick is to rinse out all the soap or detergent. Here in the desert, I hose them and brush with the soapy water and rinse well. Depending on the size of the rug, I then drape it over a chaise lounge until it stops dripping and then lay flat on the concrete patio. They are washed once a year and the colours look like new each time.

There is a long established rug cleaning business in Pasadena here, run by Armenians, and I stopped in and asked them about their method. They do exactly what I do except for hanging the rugs to dry from a huge frame. Depending on the size of the rug and drainage (it takes lots of water to rinse well) this could be done on a condo balcony.

In Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 on the west side (33/1 is circular sort of like a cul-ta-sac) there is an oriental rug shop that has a sign in the window advertising rug and kilim cleaning. I've never used them so I can't give an opinion as to how good the service is.

Update on this.

There WAS a business that opened in Pattaya that offered it.

I managed to use them while they were in business and they did a great job! The cost was reasonable, about 40 percent of what it would cost in the US.

However, they have closed their Pattaya location but retain their original Bangkok location.

The name of the company is

Original Persian Carpet Co., Ltd.

email is

They told me they will come to Pattaya sometimes for pickups, take the rugs back to Bangkok, clean them, and later deliver back to Pattaya.

I think their rates are the same for rugs and kilims which is probably standard. Its priced by size of course.
