To each their own - but for the same price as one of these you could get a nice detatched house in a mooban on the outskirts of town, complete with a garden!

this is my dilema.......whether to buy a cheaper same quality house probably more space etc...but i dont want to feel stranded out in the suburbs... :o

i like the convience of british town....nice area...just a few mins walk to bts...expensive i know....but if im gonna live in a city like bkk i reckon your home has to be as chilled out and as luxurious as can be...make life easy for yourself

moo bann or city? ...thong lor seems very nice area.....any other areas similar?

£0.5m !!!  :o  .......i must be getting a bargain then...the one im looking at is only £130,000.... :D

I don't want to piss on your dream of owning your own house but have you considered renting something?

130,000 quid offshore would give you something like 9000 quid interest or little over 600,000 baht/year. For 50,000/month you can rent something nice and you still get to keep your 130,000 quid.

Thonglor is a very nice area, and as somebody mentioned it is currently very trendy.

To be honest if you have not lived in Bangkok before, then I would think that staying in the city (somewhere like Thonglor) for a year or two would be the best way to go. It is a good central location and will allow you to pop out in the evenings to socialise, meet people and get a real feel for the city.

Jumping straight into a mooban lifestyle in the suburbs, where a night out is often more of a once a week affair rather than a once every night thing, is probably not the best way for a new arrival introduce oneself to a new city such as BKK. If you are not careful in choosing the right area for you, then you could unfortunately find yourself a little isolated in a mooban.

However once you have built up a circle of friends and you have got to grips with life in Bangkok, and especially if you have a young family, then a lot of people prefer the quieter option of the mooban. Knowing of course that if they ever want to pop into town, then they know where to go and have some mates to call on.

I would suggest that if there is a likelihood of you following the "detached house in a mooban" route within a couple of years of arriving, then it might be better to initially rent a place in somewhere like Thonglor - there are a number of very nice apartments/townhouses for rent in the area. Save your money whilst getting to know the areas in and around BKK well, and then make an informed decision on where you would like to make your family's dream home.

Just my 2 Bahts worth :D

British Town in Thonglor always looks dark, deserted, and depressing when I pass by. I can imagine it being a rundown tenement in five to ten years' time. Take the money and buy an individual house, where you and only you will be responsible for the upkeep.

I agree with you meom invest offshore and rent, then if you get bored you can move whenever you want, but if you own a house and decide you want to move you might find it difficult to sell your house as Thais dont like buying second hand houses :D

I'd be interested to see the place, wonder if it's got ford escorts lining the driveways and 15 yr olds standing on the corner in their whitest reebok classics and ralph laurens shirts having a puff? They could pass a copy of The Sun through the letterbox every morning talking about the latest Big Brother scandal and even Thailand's rain making devices could come in useful for the summer months. :D

Just to throw another opinion in.

I would rent a while and then look around after you get a feel for the place.

Thonglor is a nice area but you might not want to live there long term and the prices in that area are very high.

I have a friend who lives in Thonglor, but seems to spend most of the time out of Thonglor as he doesn't particularly like the city atmosphere.

Bear in mind if you buy something and change your mind it might be difficult to sell at a decent price. Check out the ratio of rental rates vs property prices to see if you would be getting a good return if you decided to rent out.

Also if you live in the area a while you might see some good second hand bargains turning up once in a while.

If I could find a street like my own in Dagenham in the centre of Bangkok I would have to move into it just for the comedy of the situation. :D

You're from Dagenham :D:D

Me too :D

I'll resist the urge to copy and paste Morriseys 'Dagenham Dave' lyrics on here. :D

What part of the 'nam' are you from?

I think this should be the official smiley for acknowledging people from dagenham on the internet :o as true to the Dagenham code of not smiling at anyone less than family or good friends. :D

Thurrock, well not much to be said about a place only famous for lakeside. :D

Born in Rush Green hosp, lived in Orchard Rd near the beam, moved to goodmayes then back to the cheery tree rainham.

All my family live in daggers still. :D

I used grab a burger from Zorbas cafe on goodmayes on the way home from work (big fish shop on Chadwell heath high street?). There was a little known knocking shop over the road from the station as well, my mate used to live across from it.

You must know the legendary 'Jakes Burgers' at Seven Kings? :D

I never had much time for Rainham, but my mate started a reptile shop up there so used to pop up there often enough in the end, opposite The Phoenix possibly the dreariest pub I've ever had the misfortune to enter. :o
