Notebook And Ups ?

Featured Replies

In the past I had a PC in combination with a UPS. Nowadays I use a notebook and never thought about connecting it with a UPS. Is this worthwhile doing or does a notebook have an inbuilt surge protector ?

Notebook will not have surge protector. If you are plugged into power line and battery is in the notebook then you are OK for the power cuts and voltage sags (but not much for spikes and surges). With no battery then same as a desktop.

Surge protectors on UPS are not really worth the bother.

Better to unplug in thunderstorms, as was discussed in another thread.

The UPS is to give you time to shut down if the power fails,

not necessary on the notebook as you will have 1-3 hours of battery life.

Note quite true. All notebooks use an AC to DC adapter which will aid somewhat in preventing high voltage surges to the computer. Usually the adapter will take the hit before the notebook. With a battery installed in the notebook, the battery will also absorb the lower voltage surge.

Buy an APC Mobile Surge Protector, no need for an UPS as your notebook already has a battery.
