Hello, hope someone can help.

I have an Acer Aspire 4730, with Windows XP SP3. I have a Nokia 2370.I successfully copied some mp3 audio files to the Nokia using Bluetooth, but then I couldn't copy more. Thinking I might be out of memory, I deleted the ones I had alrready copied and tried to copy more files. One time it worked, but for only one file. I took the phone to a Nokia tech, thinking I might be out of memory.

He assured me I had plenty of memory and that maybe I should try the cable that came with my Nokia instead of Blue Tooth. When I tried to load the drivers for the connector cable, using the enclosed CD, it did not work. I got a message saying Installation Failed, cannot find file specified. I removed the program, "Nokia PC Suite" and tried loading iit again with the CD, still with no luck.

Interstingly to me, when I am trying to copy the files with Bluetooth, it stops every time at 11608457 Bytes, then just closes the little 'progress' window.

Any help with any of this before I take it to the computer tech.

Thanks a lot,

Tom

I think you shouldn't require a driver to make the connection work via cable.

Make sure you get the latest version of Nokia Suite from the Nokia website. e.g. http://www.nokia-asia.com/support/download-software/nokia-pc-suites/compatibility-and-download

Might be a Bluetooth driver problem (PC) or firmware problem (phone).

Other possibilty: Maybe the phone stores the file first on the internal memory, then transfers the file to the memory card, and the internal memory runs full.

Try checking the free memory for both internal memory and memory card.

Does it work for smaller files?

Had a similar problem, loading would stop at a specific point,

Turned out to be a corrupted mp3 that had some extraneous meta-data that caused issues,

only discovered this by transferring mp3's one at a time.

This did yield and interesting result. I copied a much smaller file, and it worked. When I tried the larger file again (around 24,000,000 bytes), it stopped earlier this time, suggesting to me that maybe it is some sort of memory issue. The Nokia tech told me I still had around 700 MB out of 1 gig still available, but maybe it is not accessible for some reason???

Welo,

How do I check those two memories, and how do I know if it is a problem, and how do I correct it? Your description sounds like what I was imagining. The memory is there, but I can't get to it.

cobra has a good point. I guess you verified that the problem is not tied to that specific (albeit large) mp3 file.

However, to me it very much seems that you are running out of 'phone memory', that is the internal memory which is usually rather small. The 700 MB of free memory is most likely on the 'memory card'.

I see several possible reasons why files get transferred to the internal memory and not to the memory card

  • The phone is configured to use the internal phone memory for music files
  • The Nokia software is configured to transfer files to the internal phone memory
  • The way Bluetooth transfer works on your phone will require the file to be loaded into internal phone memory first before being transferred to the memory card.

Solutions

  • Fix the phone configuration to use the memory card
  • Fix the Nokia Suite configuration to transfer to the memory card
  • Use a data cable - will give you much better transfer speeds as well

Workarounds

  • When your phone is connected you can usually browse both phone memory and memory card from Windows Explorer - not sure that works when connected via Bluetooth. In the File Explorer browse to the memory card, find the folder for audio files and copy the file there e.g. via drag and drop
  • Remove the memory card from the phone and use a card reader in your PC - then copy the file to the memory card

You might still have to configure the phone's media player to use the memory card instead of the phone memory.

I'm sorry, I cannot give you more detailed instructions on how to do that - I don't have a Nokia phone available right now.

Thanks for all of the good advice. Based on what I understand now, all of those solutions would work, and your interpretations make sense. I will keep them for reference because they might help me understand better how to select the memory card versus the phone memory, which has eluded me on this new phone.

This morning I took my Notebook and my phone to the little booth where I bought the phone. The owner's son, also the technician, showed me how to copy and paste the file, with the use of the cord. Either I didn't need the 'drivers' that were referenced for the cord, or they somehow made it to my computer.

Just to try it out, I tried browsing to the Nokia with the plug in and with Bluetooth connected. Then I pulled the cord out, and Nokia went away, so I guess you need the cord for that particular method.

One thing I didn't realize was where to find the phone on my computer. It shows up as a removable drive, just like a thumb drive, in My Computer, which I am sure you guys already know.

By the way, my phone is a Nokia 2730 Classic (not 2370 as I said). This phone is new on the market. It is 3G compatible and costs about 3300 baht new.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Don't worry. It was definitely a good idea to go and ask for support at the shop! Maybe my post helped you understand the situation a bit more, maybe not. That's fine ;)

I have a follow on question about where phone numbers are stored. I want my numbers to go to the phone and to the card, so that in case one fails, I will still have the number in the other. Do you know how to do that on a Nokia?

I'm not a phone junkie, so others might be more knowledgeable about this. I will give it a try nevertheless.

I have my wife's Nokia N73 at hand now, this is a rather old phone though, it works like this

On the phone, go to contacts, find the entry you want to copy, 'open' it so you see its details. Then goto 'Options' and choose 'Copy to SIM direct.'.

This is to copy individual entries to the SIM card. I remember that on some phones you can make the SIM card the default storage for phone numbers. Didn't find that option on the N73.

I guess because the numbers of possible entries on the SIM card are limited, some phones don't offer that option anymore. Most phones nowadays can store much more information per contact than just name and number (detailed name, pic, email, ring tone, etc). AFAIK this information cannot be transferred to the SIM card.

You might consider to use the Nokia Suite Contact Manager to backup your entire contacts and/or transfer to a different phone.
