Swapping My Engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

i have recently paid 50% advance for an engine swap. My car is from 1993 Mitsu lancer and has just 1.3cc Engine. I'm getting 1.8cc DOHC probably from 2004/5.

my questions:

1. i have asked the garage guys not to touch the LPG system as i want to take it to dedicated LPG garage only. They will install the new engine on normal fuel system. My new engine should be EFI but old engine is carburetor, so wondering, can i still use my old LPG system?

2. They will change the information on Blue book but what about my insurance? i have 3rd party+ insurance valid till December. how do i change the info on that? will they change it?

thanks

When you have received the updated registration (blue) book showing the changes you must send a copy to your Broker informing them of the changes - as they need to inform the Insurance company.
As you only have 3 + 1 the chances of having to pay more is very remote.
Your car can be made to run on the original system but you may have to add a few parts - like a mixer. You will be best placed to go to a proper installer rather than have them bodge it all together.

As you already have the tank it may not cost too much to convert over to gas injectors.

My gas tank in the car is pretty old......i have noticed last checked in 2005. it's kind of worrying me.....do they have any service in the LPG shop where they inspect the whole system and gives us green signal or certificate perhaps?

yesterday, i was watching on Thai news and saw a car has been blown away while filling gas.....not sure what is the reason....but it's pretty scary.....

does anybody has any idea what precaution we should take while driving on LPG?

Not sure about this where cars are concerned. Back home a 5 year operational life was all that was permitted as pits and micro fissures could develop inside the tank from moisture and expansion contraction with no way to really check it well. If you're concerned maybe your piece of mind is more important and you should just err on the side of caution & replace the tank.. As for the carb versus FI as stated they might have to add a few pieces but should work ok..

Honestly though if you do consider replacing the tank it might be a good idea to have the entire system upgraded to a Prins system or equivalent as you'll get better mix with better efficiency, power and less engine wear and tear..
