The linked unit is a double-DIN sized piece, which would require a new dash panel in order to create required depth:

Australian version with Double-DIN Stereo:

Thai version with touch-screen:

pjslcd.jpg

The Phillipines version also has a double-DIN stereo, and is made in Thailand, so you should be able to get the genuine part locally. Dont' bother asking your delaer though, there's little chance they'll have access to the part number.. I'd suggest contacting Mitsu TH directly at: customer.plus[at]th.mitsubishi-motors.com

If that fails sourcing from Australia would be the next best option, but it'll probbaly be expensive..

Also, note that there's a LOT of options when it comes to double-DIN stereos with navi, bluetooth, USB etc - if this is something you really want, I'd suggest a look around the offerings from the bigger brands as well (Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Alpine, Clarion etc).

Do you have any pics of the phillipeno interior, double din version, and i presume the re dundant single din could have a pocket or something put in it`s place, i`m just not that impressed with the current h/u, and the fact that the illumination colour can`t be changed, i hate the strong blue when driving at night and when you have it off it is a pain to find the buttons to change track and when you do find them the bloody blue bursts back into life for a few seconds again,,,, does the h/u burst into colour when, say, advancing songs or volume when using the swr switch ? as you have fitted, i see it on the forums, but cant read thai so not sure...oh and what maps does the alpine addon gps take?

It appears I've jumped the gun on the Philippines - they haven't yet received the model with the uprated stereo, so Australia remains the nearest market with it. Note that the Australian model is not however sourced from Thailand (it's a Japan import).

Re: illumination, I don't know - it doesn't bother me so I've never switched it off ;)

The Alpine navigation unit uses propretary Alpine maps. If you're looking for something more open, the Kamaz NBX700 can interface with the touchscreen, and uses SpeedNavi maps. However it's more expensive - the Alpine is being sold for 10K Baht fitted (price from my local dealer), vs 20-25K Baht for the Kamaz.

This is one option, but it doesn`t look that great in my mind, maybe better in the flesh....2000 bhat,

a replacement moulding moving the facia out to allow enough depth for a double din...

Not feeling that one I'm afraid, looks a bit too home-made to me..

Here's another custom-fabricated one by S.P.M in BKK, not too bad, but still not as good as the OEM piece IMHO:

Hey MRO, do you have any ideas on how to disable the annoying 2 second need to touch the screen to get it to come to life?????

I don't, but I'm sure there's a propeller-head inside Alpine that's hoarding a firmware revision we'd all like!

Still, as much of a pain as it is, we can't really complain - if we were driving something with a OEM screen (Camry, Teana, Accord etc), the thing wouldn't turn on at all unless the handbrake is engaged.. Even when I said "if you won't do whatever you have to do to make it work while driving, I'm not buying this car", they wouldn't do it. Which is why my wife doesn't drive a Teana V6 (or Camry Hybrid, my 2nd choice) BTW. True story :)

You know the car we had before the PS was a 2009 Honda Civic Navi and before we even drove it out of the showroom the salesgirl asked if we wanted the handbrake interlock disabled ;) That was the dealer in Songkhla/Hatyai.....

Had that car 9 months.....the Mrs liked it, but IMHO Thailand's roads are no place for a sedan.

It`s not always the handbrake that holds the screen off, i had the full navi/screen/factory fit system in my audi turbo.....the signal also can come off the ABS sensor, once i found the right wire where it came into the car (left hand kick plate) i cut the one to the tv/multimedia side of the H/U and fitted a simple on/off push switch, to enable me to kill the tv side if i got stopped by the fuzz, but left the other signal to the Nav side of the H/U as it needed that for obvious reasons.. But these babys look like a different set up...Menue to accecpt yes or no, and i presume a signal from the key switch because as yo know they need restarting if you turn the key to ACC then start......somebody will know....as you say...maybe if we can find that wire and switch it over to the ACC feed, then you will only need to restart the screen once and not every time we switch the engine off and dont remove the key....Mmmm...anyone have the wiring diagram for the M7 Screen.....?

Posted

yes, I agree. To get the Alpine unit to go directly to the Navi screen for example will be a software change, nothing to do with brake or other switches........just wishful thinking that someone has been able to get into the guts of the system and reprogrammed it :)

OK guys, check out this Website

Specifically the item Here called the TR-7

I wonder if any of the electronics gurus can figure out how to make this work to get the video screen to come alive......

Nice find! :)

Unfortunately it won't be able to overcome the push-and-hold for 2 seconds on our screens - the method it's defeating is the older alpine activation method which was a combination of both the handbrake and the foot brake being applied.

However, it also supports delayed-power-off, which could be used to keep power going to the LCD screen while moving from ACC to Start - and it could be used to replace my home-made hacked-up timer I use to keep my WDTV powered for up for 15 mins (so I don't have to wait for a restart after running into the 7/11 etc :) )

OK who`s going to be the test pilot, looks as you say it should work for delay timer...

Yes, seems like this company has many "gadgets"

I realize that the TR7 is specifically default wired for the handbrake models of Alpine screens......was just hoping that I might be able to pique the interest of one of the electronic types to take on the challenge of the PS screen ;)

I haven't taken the plunge yet, but my old Vitara is struggling, so...

Has anyone been able to get an ipod working with there PS? I notice the Alpine unit doesn't have a usb interface - is there a way around that?? ie I like to plug a thumb-drive in to play music rather than burning CD's.

There's 2 ways to connect an iPod:

1. Alpine KCA-121B AUX-in adapor (accepts any analogue stereo input)

2. Alpine KCA-420i Ai-Net ipod controller (full integration with stereo)

And a couple of options for USB audio:

1. Alpine KCA-620M (full integration with stereo)

2. Use an external player via a KCA-121B adaptor

Thanks MRO; looks kinda complicated... do local audio shops know about this stuff??

What happens if you were to do a bit of a re-jig out of the box on a brand new car like this?? Do you tell Mitsu that you dont want the current stereo? Do you have any options to upgrade with Mitsu?? or do you find an Audio shop who will buy the current one of you and upgrade with them??

Same thing for those who upgrade wheels? Can you sell the current ones easy enough??

Thanks in advance from first-time new car buyer - maybe?!?!?

Alpine shops will understand it all just fine.. it's really only a matter of knowing the part number, hooking it up to power and plugging in a single data cable (Alpine Ai-Net)

New car dealerships don't normally get involved in this type of thing, and it's not normally possible to special order a vehicle with delete options in Thailand. I wouldn't expect any issues trading-in the OEM stereo at a aftermarket audio shop though.

As above - trade them in with the tire shop. Trade-in value for the standard wheels/tires appears to be 17k-20k Baht for a set of 4.

I managed 25K trade-in for the full set of 5, with > 7000 KM on the tires (the spare was as-new though).

we don't have 2 din stereos in any of the Montero Sport (Pajero Sport) models i've seen here in Manila, only single din, JVC, which is an ok head unit, but i agree with the comment above about the blue display option which does not match the rest of the instruments BMW-like orange glow

does anybody know if the orange vs blue has an impact on driver's alertness if ever?

you can choose to change the display to orange on the head unit (takes a bit of fiddling around) but the volume knob, and another knob, I can't remember which one, remains a bright, not matching blue, really quite annoying...

Was thinking of changing the head unit, to perhaps a kenwood with a DVD player and monitor outs, but then it would not likely match with the computer display on the dash, or the steering wheel controls

any comments?

Yes, as noted I jumped the gun on the Philippines model having the double-DIN - it's just been released in Malaysia, and Philippines won't be getting it until the next minor change.

As for color, I still can't comment as I just don't notice it - the only time I see the stereo is when I purposely go look at it :) Maybe it's a situation like a those people whoe are pre-disposed to getting sore eyes on bright, sunny days?

In any case, I'm sure if you hunt around you'll find a unit with a farily close color-match for the car's dash illumination.

Well of course I don't, nor does my wife when she's driving, but the kids do like to watch music videos or sitcoms if they're in the car, and the odd Blu-Ray rip if we're going on a longer drive.. Most of the time the WDTV is used to play our lossless audio collection (ripped from CD), which far exceeds the sound quality and storage capacity of any iPod or portable MP3 player (~300 GB / 1500 CD's ATM).

True , but a pain in the a.ss having to use a remote control while driving, as i`m sure i will have to skip the odd song that i don`t like....when i get my wdtv plumed in...such a shame really as i just fitted the steering wheel switch today, oh and yes, when the H/U is in black out mode that bloody BLUE jumps into life when using the steering wheel switch also....urughhh.....maybe i should see whats inside the detachable facia.....maybe just coloured diodes?

FYI, just our rotten luck we have the DVA 9861E as the Alpine DVA-9861Ri which is sold in europe, HAS switchable facia colours....urughhh again..

I wasnt sure i heard of Thais watching and driving at the same time. Some foreigners seem to loose their mind when they come here.

<deleted>!!?? - I just bought one for home last week after procrastinating for a year, and now you guys are telling me you have em in your car. This is awesome. You have it hooked up to the existing Alpine screen ... or?? Where do you keep the actual unit?

This eliminates the need for ipod and usb interface then. I'm keen to know more.
