I just bought this player yesterday and think that I have been had, because despite taking a thumb drive to the shop with an MKV on it and it playing okay. It seems that it only seems to play certain MKV files, the discernment of which is beyond me. Any way at the moment I am trying to up date the software but despite following all the instructions and downloading the software files and extracting it and putting it in the route directory of the thumb, the machine is still not recognising it! Connecting to the Net via True doesn't seem to be an option. Any suggestions please?

Can you return it and buy a LG ? A couple of my friend have this one , I forget the exact model but it is a newer one . Price about 6000 baht at central . Bring in about 7 or 8 different movies on mkv on a dvd and test the unit to make sure that it plays them .

Was it by any chance that you were trying to play an mkv rip of Avatar ? Because they had some issues with most version of that rip playing , even the legit bluray of Avatar caused a lot of problems with many different bluray players .

I think the lg player might have been the lg bd350

MKV is a container not a type of video. That means many different styles of video and audio can be stored within an MKV container. To play a video your device needs to have the right codec. So for example an xvid video stored in an MKV container may play where as an h264 video stored in an MKV container may not.

The world (particularly the pirate world) is moving to x264 (an open version of h264) type video stored in an MKV container as the primary method of delivery. Just about all HiDef stuff you download will be in this format. Xvid stored in an avi container still dominates in the Standard Definition world but x264 and MKV are catching up and I am sure will eventually beat Xvid.

The audio also can be stored in different formats. For example dolby digital, DTS, or even the new Master Audio high def formats. Once again your box may play one or other but probably not all formats. Dolby Digital is the most common these days but you can expect the high def audio formats to gradually become more popular.

On a computer you can just install the relevant codec. This is not an option for set top boxes so if playing a particular format is important to you, you need to test each type of video on the machine BEFORE you buy it. Better still is to have a dedicated computer connected to your TV to play this stuff. It's more expensive initially but as new formats get released and become popular you can update your computer and stay current.

just saw this and thought i'd put in my two cents since i own this player. purchased it around the same time as you, and so far i have had no problems whatsoever. most of the high quality mkv files i get are x264 (actually all of them are) and they all work with DTS sound in my home theater. i am guessing that the file you downloaded is probably not encoded by divx and that would mean it wouldn't play on your player.

also, the problem with avatar has been solved with the new firmware update and runs great on mine.

about the updating...go to this link -> http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?tmplt=ePlatform%20-%20Philips&scy=SG&slg=ENG&sct=BD_PLAYERS_SU&cat=PLAYERS_RECORDERS_CA&grp=SOUND_AND_VISION_GR&session=20100821234952_161.88.245.140&ctn=BDP3100/98&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software and download the file and follow the instructions, that's what i did and it worked for me.

also, you might not be able to play the mkv file since your usb might not be supported by the player. i know the player doesn't support NTFS format according to the manual, but i formatted both my sandisk and kingston usb drives as NTFS and they work fine. any other help needed then PM me.

Thanks I did manage to update it and it did play the Spartacus HD files that if would not play before; however I have had the problem that was alluded to above. Some files I manged to see the picture and not hear the sound or visa versa. I am hoping that Phillips will eventually come up with an update that solves all the issues. But I think as a previous poster alluded to, it is best to have a dedicated computer preferably a laptop, which is less incongruous.

i'm not really sure why it's doing that, do you know which files you are having problems with? usually, i just watch most of the dvdrips of movies/series on my laptop, but never had a problem running them on the blu ray player but they look very blurry on my hdtv so that's why i prefer the laptop. hdrips, all run fine, no problems whatsoever. probably the places you're getting them from might not be so reliable as they might use different encoding, since these days almost everything is encoded in divx and your player supports all divx encoded files.
