Hi,

after about 8 years my ubc receiver didn't work anymore, no lights...nothing (fuse inside is ok). I try to find somebody to fix it but....can not!!

Does anybody know if I can use any satellite receiver with a smart card reader?

I found a truevision receiver here (Cambodia) but they want 200 US Dollar for it, which I think is a bit to much. A cheap Chinese receiver with a card reader cost about 80 dollar but nobody knows if i can use it.

Is it right that most receiver search for the satellite signal so I don't have to punch in any numbers?

I don't wanna start a discussion about truevision here, coz I know most people hate it.

thanks

You are talking about an IRD, Integrated Receiver Decoder. I had mine fry after about 3 years and Truevisions replaced the next day. But as you are in Cambodia, I am guessing there is no Truevisions there. So how did you keep your smart card active? I have heard you can tweak different IRDs to work, but I don't know what's involved. Sounds like you can waste $80 for something that may work or $200 for something that should work. There are articles about IRDs, do a google search for Integrated Receiver Decoders. Good luck...

The Dreambox 500S will meet your requirements and costs around $80

Most receivers should have the transponder listing to Thaicom

and then will be able to search for the channels.

yeah i think that's the name for it

--So how did you keep your smart card active?--

Once in a while traveling to Bangkok I go to a truevision store and pay for it.

I guess some shops in Phnom Penh can do it also for you.

About the dreambox 500, I had one for a short while (still have it)........a copy from china. My mistake was that I shot the box dead....installed a new image and the box was dead :-( I read later about it not to update it with the image I used. Everything I tried didn't help to fix it.

I didn't had the chance to try the true smartcard in it.

As long as the box has CAM Irdeto (the signal decrypting software required for most TrueVision channels) built-in and a TrueVisions card you should be fine. Of course, you don't even need a card for some of their channels like the learning channels and a few others. Having the a receiver with the TrueVisions menu built-in would be desirable as it automatically tunes to all the TrueVisions channels; otherwise, you would have to enter the half dozen of so TrueVisions signal frequencies to tune in all the channels...not a major thing. Something like one these boxes would work. http://www.9sats.com/product/product.php?cat=53.115.426

Hmmm....

That's exactly what I did with my DB500S. I plugged it the UBC coax cable and reset the box to factory settings, did a simple configuration (no DiSEqC), selected Thaicom 5 - 78.5E (tried both C-Band and Ku-Band - by the way, what's the difference?), then searched for transponders, and nothing found... I went to LyngSat to get all possible details and got lost into the numbers and acronyms. Anyway the search should be done automagically, right?

Am I missing a detail?

Thanks if you can help me or at least point me in the right direction...

Replying to myself:

I've done some research and found all that I needed... I know now what is Ku-Band (vs. C Band) and my DreamBox need to be configured manually because the default settings won't work. I managed to scan the transponders and get a lot of services, and now I'm playing with the settings (satellite.xml) to add more transponders because it seems that the default list of the DreamBox is not complete.

I'm having fun!

Dreamboxes do need some setup, but the amount fo things they can do (including UBC for 150b a month :whistling: ) is pretty incredible.. Media center / PC integration, networked PVR, etc etc etc

The clone boxes are about 2900 these days and theres clone DM800's with HDMI and high def capability for in the 8000's range.

Wouldnt look at anything else.

As I learn more on the matter, I can only agree with you. Seems like my major limitation is that small red dish pointing to one satellite, and the main service I can get is from TRUE. I wonder if I shouldn't cancel the thing and invest in a dish that can move to other satellites (I do have a DiSEqC box collecting dust here). However I would need to prove the concept before my g/f agrees to this, she really needs (hmm...) Halmark Channel and HBO with Thai subtitles. Let's see how far I can get with what I have now, then I'll upgrade the installation.

For now I'm just getting bit disapointed about the small quantity of free stuff I can get from this red small dish. Well, anyway, it's free so what can I expect? I'll have to Google a bit about the discounted UBC though... If that works, then my g/f will be open to anything. As long as Halmark and HBO have Thai subtitles... :-)

I wonder what sw image is loaded in the Dreambox?

I use Pli Jade and have found the satellite data to be accurate.

I just checked and the list for Thaicom looks correct,

but I cannot scan Thaicom as I am in the Middle East.

You need the Ku band settings for True.

In the setup of the box you should be able to see a list of the transponders,

Setup/Satellites and Transponders/Transponder Edit

Scroll down to Thaicom, press the right arrow to get in the righthand column,

and if necessary add the ones used by True. Just look down that list you found on Lyngsat.

12479H

12521H

12562H

12604H

12657H

12720H

12745H

The H means horizontal

FEC 30000 2/3

Initially you can add just one transponder then press the button to scan

and see which channels come up, just to gain confidence in what you are doing.

In case you didn't find this page on Lyngsat which lists the TrueVisions/UBC frequencies. http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/truevisions.html

Please note that one frequency/transponder uses a 25776 Symbol Rate versus 30000 which all the other frequencies use. Horizontal (H) polarity is used on all channels. You shouldn't have to enter any SID, VPID, or APID codes as the receiver should tune into those automatically as long as you have entered the correct transponder freq, symbol rate, and polarity. Your subscription card will determine how many of the channels can be decoded/displayed. Good luck

Thanks Astal!

I am using PLI Jade 3 and you are right, the list is complete and accurate. I got confused by the LyngSat list which also includes C Band and if I'm not wrong, my tiny red UBC dish won't let me access them...

I'm still Googling for the cheap UBC however I'm not in a hurry, I would like to understand more and better how it works first, and all the possibilities.

About the HD reception, from what I understand, it depends on the box and not the dish, right? Then the DM800 should be fine. But will it accept my UBC subscription card should I decide to continue that way? That would be a great improvement as I believe that I would be able to mount disks to have a virtual unlimited recording space and be able to broadcast to any computer in my home (and more...).

Thanks also Pib!

I didn't have that page, now I have thanks to you. And the exception is noted... :-)

I doubt that my UBC subscription card will work in my DM500S however I will give it a try. Won't hurt...

For HD transmissions you use the same dish, but need a more sophisiticated receiver.

I am sure I have seen reports of people using Dreambox for UBC.

PM joncl, he is the guru.
