HI guys!

If a person has overstay, will that person be able to fly a domestic flight within thailand without having any problems?

Wish to take a friend with me to Phuket by flight but she has overstay in her passport?

Will that be a problem for her when we come to the airport?

Can't see why it would be a problem, domestic flight only look at the ID page of the passport to confirm ID.

Thx a lot, are you sure?

I hope there will be no problem because we have an important meeting to attend to in Phuket.

Anyone else think something different?

Which of the following is the case?

1. Your friend is currently on overstay, ie she did not leave Thailand on or before the day her permission to stay expired.

2. She had an overstay in the past, paid the fine and has a stamp in her passport to that effect but she currently has a valid permission to stay.

In that case she will have no problem travelling on a domestic flight as long as she does not get stopped and checked by a police officer before she gets on the plane. Such police checks appear to be very rare but its possibility can of course not be excluded entirely.

Thx will forward this to her. Then she can decide if she will go with me on the plane or take the bus.

Thank you so much, take care!

Be aware that if she chooses the bus option then they often have a check point when you cross the country before Ranong where they will check passports. I have seen people get taken off the bus for overstay even though they were heading to do a visa run.

Oh dear, thx a lot for that, had no idea.

Good morning btw! :)

I do not often stay in hotels within Thailand, but recently I had a hotel make a copy of my passport ID page, visa (extension) page, and was very upset that I did not have my TM6 Arrival card available ... a hotel may be more likely to report this information to IMM officials than an airline as hotels TTBOMK are required to report to IMM.

I always check in with my Thai driving licence at domestic flights.

Me too .......

Just been island hopping, one hotel demanded my passport, I didn't have it, they gave up, accepted Thai driving licence in the end.

5 internal flights in the last year, no passport, just Thai DL.

Loads of coach journeys and police checks, never wanted to see any ID from a person with a white face .... looking for hill tribe people.

Just a few observations:

If on overstay, I do not see the need to travel to another holiday destination, funds used for that should be used to clear the overstay first and become legal again. It's easy enough!

As an answer to he OP's question, she will most likely be able to get on the plane. But she will at all times run the risk to get arrested, and once that happens a court case will happen, with the rel risk of a permanent black list.

As some other posters indicated, most, if not all, hotels do have a reporting requierement towards immigration of all guests they have checking in, so the arrest scenario is in no way a farfetched one!

In short, yes, travel will be possible be IMO a rather dumb thing to do, as for less money then the airfare to Phuket would cost this person could get totally legal again.

Just to make sure, we cannot really condone and assist in traveling while illegaly in he Kingdom, get her to sort her paperwork out, even it if it would mean missing out a nice trip to South Thailand!

This is the form that hotels and other places where foreigners stay must submit to the local immigration office within 24 hours from the foreigners' arrival: http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/pdf/tm30.pdf

On page 2, the seventh column specifically asks for the expiration date of the foreigner's permission to stay. I seem to remember a recent news report about the immigration office in Phuket cracking down on guest houses that fail to submit this form. Hotels, of course, submit it routinely, some perhaps even online.

he can book the room in his name not his friend and she will not have to show her passport.

It's on checking in and not on booking that the hotel will ask for all the details and they will require the passport of the person actually checking in!
