Happy Halloween

Featured Replies

Happy be damned.

15 years ago, Halloween was only something that we (in NZ) knew existed in America....it's not our tradition. .....Then a retail outlet (The Red Shed) started promoting it with cheap costumes and chocolates that they imported from China.....now, I have beggars knocking on my door for treats.

One radio host (Leighton Smith, who I usually disagree with) put it succinctly; "It's a form of terrorism. Give me something I want, or I will do something nasty to you".

Bah humbug.

This Americanisation of Halloween in awful. I remember as a kid we would go out all dressed up knocking on doors. The expectation was for a song or dance and a few jokes which we never disappointed with.....all for a few monkey nuts or a bit of fruit.

owadays kids approach the doorstep with their hand held out. Sign of the times I suppose.....:whistling:

Well, to give an alternative view, I enjoy the kids that come around as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Tonight Jude went out with a Chinese boy and an Italian girl, a fine coctail, all with their mothers and they were welcomed by one and all and all that knocked at my door got a box of treats.

I think it helps community spirit, if you don't want to get involved, don't answer the door, they soon move on, at the end of the day it is just another way for the kids to have a good, safe time.

They might just learn a little from history, myth and past glories.

As for begging, I guess our definition of begging are viewed in vastly different interpretations.

Happy be damned.

And so it proved.

In Sth Auckland, a lower decile suburb, people were threatened in their own homes

"Sweets or threats,"...... Simply put, yes terrorism.

I liked when I was a kid, making a "Guy" for Guy Fawkes day, propping it up in a trolley or pram, woteva.

Put a sign on it.......

1d for the Guy.

I collected a few shillings for double happys etc.

No threats, just good fun.

AND DECENT FIREWORKS.!!!!!!!!

Roll on 5th Nov.

Roll on 5th Nov.

Do they do that in Thailand?

OC, there is Loy Krathon coming up soon, 12th Nov, I thinx.

I have been on Phuket for the last 4 times, Bangers twice.

Too many ppl down by the river, in Bangers, still fun..

Great nite down in Chalong, all the bars on the road leading from the circle to the pier, have lotsa things going, free food too, from some.

Dunno about fireworks, Guy Fawkes is Brit thing, but those fiery paper balloon things with a burning kero device are let go by the dozen.

The road is turned into a one way for most of the evening, cars galore.

Betta than Patong, more laid back.

Love it there, lotsa fun in Chalong, give it a thought.

Hey man, ya seen Ping around? Saw him last year.

Ahhh, penny for the guy was good fun until someone told us it was begging!1

Used to contribute back into the community with the fireworks, until I got busted with a single malt, havana and crack,

lifes a bum pre-teens,

Yeh Pete, met him for a beer in OTOP a month or two back. Haven't heard from him since (nor he from me).

Now I've moved to Patong I'll give him a call, see if he's still around.

He hasn't posted for some time.
