Negligent Baht Bus Driver Causes Death of Bangkok Traveller

A Bangkok man was killed Nov19, when his pickup was involved in an accident with a baht bus in Pattaya. The victim was projected through the windscreen to his death after his vehicle subsequently collided with an electricity pylon.

Pattaya, November 20, 2010, [PDN]: the collision between a white baht-bus and a pickup proved fatal to the latter driver as he subsequently rammed an electricity pylon and was flung through the windscreen and killed as his head impacted with the tarmac. The incident occurred on Sukhumvit Road at 5.30pm, Nov19, on front of the Ukraine Company and police were notified of the accident virtually immediately.

A rescue team, composed of police and Sawang Boriboon paramedics, was sent by the notified officer, Pol.Lt.Col Hathailert Luepuen from Dongtan Sub-Police Station, and duly arrived to find a severely damaged 4-door, black Toyata Vigo pickup, which had crashed into an electricity pylon.

What I think is interesting, Pattaya One News states:

The driver of the vehicle, Khun Chanin aged 37, a business owner from Pattaya was pronounced dead-at-the-scene

See this linlk:

Why can't the local media get the facts straight?

I fail to see where the Baht Bus driver is negligent, when the driver of the black pickup was:

  • Driving at a very high rate of speed and lost control. (Pattaya One reported the pickup spun around several times prior to impacting the pylon).
  • Not wearing a seat belt.

Due to the hight rate of speed of the black pickup, the Baht Bus driver was probably unaware of the black pickup approaching upon him when he pulled out into traffic. Especially if the Baht Bus was full of passengers standing on the back.

Police are following up the case and the baht-bus driver will likely be charged with negligent driving leading to the death of a fellow road user.

Cause of death was almost certainly the deceased not wearing a seatbelt.

This presumably is the law in Thailand.

In Thailand, not wearing a seatbelt by any person in the front seats are subject to a 2000 baht fine for each infraction. :redcard2:

It is enforced in Bangkok, but doesn't seem to be enforced in the Pattaya area. Instead, the Thai Police in the Pattaya area are too busy rousting the motorbike offenders for 200-400 baht infractions! :whistling:

:welcomeani: to Pattaya!
