Married Thai Lady With Foreigner Surname

Featured Replies

And a final point to another person who posted the comment that a Thai woman can't buy or sell land without her husband's permission...and that was what caused former PM Thaksin legal problems. I may be wrong, but what caused him and his wife problems was that he illegaly bought and sold land and property using his wife's name...in an attempt to avoid paying tax in his name on that land and property...that caused Thaksin and his wife's legal problems. It had nothing to do with her need have his permision to buy the property.

Wrong. His wife is the party who bid for the land owned by FIDIC (a govt enterprise). Under Thai law, property acquired by a spouse is considered joint property.

He was found guilty of conflict of interest, as PM who had control over govt bodies, directly or indirectly, and one major piece of evidence used in the trial is his written permission for his wife to make the acqusition which was submitted to the Land Dept.

I was under the impression that Thaksin broke a law, which ironically he had introduced himself while PM, prohibiting members of the government and their spouses to deal with government agencies, such as FIDIC. Precisely in order to avoid any conflict of interest. And that's why Khunying Pojamon must now return the piece of land she had acquired.

But back to the OP: Is there any reason to be suspicious when the wife asks for divorce, apparently only to allow her to sell a piece of land?
