Pakistani Governor Salman Taseer'S Alleged Killer Faces Court

Featured Replies

At risk of delving slightly into the area of OTB-ishness, I found the below to be as alarming for the reception at court of the alleged killer as the killing itself. What is this World coming too?

Pakistani governor Salman Taseer's alleged killer faces court

THE suspected killer of a prominent Pakistani governor received a hero's welcome as he arrived at an Islamabad court today.

A rowdy crowd slapped Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri on the back and kissed his cheek as he was escorted inside the court today.

Lawyers not involved in his case tossed rose petals, while hundreds of sympathisers chanted slogans in his favour and one gave him a flower necklace.

Punjab Governor Salman Taseer's was shot dead yesterday, allegedly at the hands of police commando Qadri, 26, one of the men assigned to protect Mr Taseer.

The 66-year-old governor, one of the country's most outspoken voices against religious extremism, was shot dead outside an Islamabad cafe in broad daylight in the country's most high-profile assassination in three years.

Police say Mr Qadri confessed to killing Mr Taseer because of the politician's opposition to strict blasphemy laws.

The guy was doing the right thing, according to the world outside Pakistan. But for the population of rural Pakistan, and a lot of 'me too'ers' in the cities, his outspokenness was in itself blasphemy and they believed he deserved to die for it.

UK idle youth od Pakistani descent are far more 'Islamicised' than those of other European countries, and even the city dwellers of Pakistan. Several years ago a Pakistani colleague of mine was going to UK to meet his preselected wife. His family, in Pakistan, and the prospective bride's family, who had emigrated to England, were long-time friends - generations of it. Both were upper-middle-class. Jamal was a civil engineer, working on some of the same projects as I.

When he came back from vacation I asked him if he were married. Absolutely not, he said. This family had emigrated to UK thirty or forty years before and had not moved forward one inch from the way they thought then (end of WWII / division of India and Pakistan). Whereas Jamal and family had lived the urban Pakistani life and progressed with all their acquaintances to a much more liberal outlook. He could not stand the thought of having to spend his life with this girl whose outlook was more old-fashioned than his grandmother (his words).

Maybe this should go to OTB, then I'd discuss things further.

i would agree, far better in OTB

The scary thing is that these people genuinely believe that what they are doing is right.

If he's executed, the Muslim population of Bradford have promised to raise the city to the ground and kill all the Englishmen in the County. police fear there could be up to three casualties ( bedlam boys bedlam)

The three casualties will be bedlam boys?

Could be.....They've already had to cancel all the panto's as the giant couldn't smell any englishmen when he came on

The three casualties will be bedlam boys?

Actualyl the casualties are expected to be Mr Bedlam and his son and their best mate Mr Boys ( the one from Tooting )

Eee Baaa gum, there's nowt wrong with Bradford, lad.

Be good to get back there one day.

I remember when I was working in North Africa, the Moors came down from the hills.

In Bradford it's the whores who come down from the mills.

But they do a reet good lamb curry there nowadays, washed down with a sparkling lassi.

How do you get a dog to sparkle.

Lassi is a wet yoghurt with either salt or sugar dumped in it.

Lassie is a sheepdog with the leftovers of the lamb curry dumped in it.

(But make sure the cur stays outside, or it'll re-dump the lamb curry on your best wellies)
