I am asked to allow Jave to instal an update. Later when prompted to install up comes a box saying it can't be done 'failed to install instalation files' I think. I click ok and we are back to normal.This has happened often does it matter?

go to the Control Panel if you are running WinXP and check the version of your Java

Perform a manual update -- which is what I do. Always uninstall any older versions before installing the latest build.

That's the best thing to do, yep.

But, you don't need to uninstall older versions. It works just fine without doing that.
