I am planning a trip to Luang Prabang for three days. I want to take a Thai friend with me. She does not have a Thai passport, only a Thai ID card.

I know a Thai national can enter Laos at the Nong Khai Freindship Bridge with just a ID card for a stay of up to three days (nights?).

My question is will she be allowed to fly either Laos Air or Thai Airways from Thailand to Luang Prabang for three nights on a Thai ID card only? Anyone done this before? Thanks.

Passport is definetly needed for all internatonal trips. She will be able to get a visa on arrival for US$20, plus two photos for a 30 day stay in Laos.

The ID card is only useful in tandem with a Border Pass, which allows you to cross over to the neigbouring province for a max of usually 3 days. It is only for overland travel and the border pass is no good for travelling further afield. So I Thai can cross into Vientiene Prefecture, but go no further.
