Sakhon Nakhon – Best Hotels? – Best Route?

Recommended Posts

Hi, We’re planning a trip to see the wife’s rello's near S.N. shortly. Been twice before but not for 5 or 6 years. Previously stayed in the Sakhon Grand Palace. Is there any hotel any where better in or just out of town, preferably in Udon direction? Seem to remember seeing a new hotel last time I was there on the main highway to Udon and near the S.N. airport. Also which is the best route there from BKK these days, straight up and right turn at Udon or take the hypotenuse and cut through the hills? Any thing new in the shopping, restaurant, line there these days? Makro? Appreciate your comments.

What, have i got to respond to my own posting? Come on, lets be avin ya, somebody must have an opinion or two? [Even ManU supporters are invited to respond, that is if they've got over their weak performance at the weekend].

Sorry to harp on about this...

I’ve had a look at the TAT website which has the names and telephone numbers of the following hotels: Dusit, Imperial, M.J. Sakon and Sakon Grand Palace. Does anybody who has stayed in S.N or who lives in the area have a recommendation of which hotel is the better?

I've stayed at the Imperial before which is in town it was ok, pretty basic room with a/c and hot water and if i rememeber correctly they have a karoke at night. I've heard that the MJ Hotel is a bit better this hotel is also located in town, If i was you i'd try one of these two.

Thanks for that Farlangrakthai. I'll probably be trying the MJ as the wifes rellos have heard its ok.

And thanks for your contribution Surin, how long did it take you to come up with that quip.

Hi Bredbury,

Not too many people stayed round Sakhon Nakhon it seems, judging by the poor response to your request. FWIW, I once stayed at the place you were curious about at the crossroads on the way out towards Udon before the airport. It is called Phu Phan Palace I think, and belongs to the Rajabat Teachers College. They charge 500 baht a night and the rooms are not bad, although there's not much in the way of room service, should your TV or lights malfunction late at night.

Can be a good place to crash in a hurry, but bit far out of town. :o

Cheers for your responses. As Plachon says "Not too many people stayed round Sakhon Nakhon it seems, judging by the poor response to your request" - no farlangs in S.N. then, seems hard to believe.

I stay in Nakhon Phanom three or four months of the year, I visit Sakon Nakhon regularly but only on a day basis, as only one hour drive from my house. I have never had to use any hotels in Sakon Nakhon, so cannot comment on any of them.

Any thing new in the shopping, restaurant, line there these days? Makro? Appreciate your comments.

There is a big C there now a cinema, bowling alley and a small market opposite it, not sure when it was all built. Also a Makro on the main road into town. You said you were last there 5-6 years ago.

Best Regards

I have stayed in the Dusit a few times when too pissed to ride back to the village, 900 Baht a night. The hotel on the main highway to Udon is OK, nearly all the hotels are reasonable as long as you don't expect anybody to speak English. If you haven't beeen there for 5 or 6 years there have been a few changes, Big C and Tesco Lotus opened up stores 2 years ago, yes there is a Makro and the wife just informed me there is a Pizza Company near big C. A big multiplex cinema opened at Big C too. Sorry I can't tell you anything about driving from Bangkok, I always fly, but I would avoid the highway from Udon to Sakon, mid-week isn't too bad but near the weekend is suicide especially near Udon, and especially on a bike. I seriously thought I had managed to get on the wrong side of a dual carriage way, but it was just all the Thai drivers driving on the wrong side of the road and not giving a sh*t, bloody scary.

Where's the bowling alley Mr Conrad?????

Hi the bowling alley is upstairs beside the cinema, opposite big C.

It is tenpin bowling about eight lanes in total, had a few games there last month. Price about 45 baht per person per game, shoe hire is extra but not expensive, you have to use socks or buy from them 20 baht a pair.

Not well advertised outside but it is there. Hope to have a game again next week or so.

Best Regards

We stayed in the MJ after checking out Phu Phan Palace and Akkarasom (very quiet setting, too quiet for us) which was surprisingly good.

Haven't been to the wife's place for about 7 years and was amazed at how much SN has come on. Last time we went the only place for foreign food was greenspot or greensomething opposite the bus station, now there's most things any shopping mall has.

The biggest surprise of all was the number of farlangs we saw, even saw two just 2 kms from her off-the-beatentrack-village!
