My Wife Has Two Names,

Featured Replies

OK guys, here we go, this should be fun :o

I'm just coming up to my first extension of my non-0 visa (marriage). I have all the paperwork, bank deposit etc etc etc.

Now the fun part:-

When we got married (in the UK) we used my wife's passport as her ID along with certified copies of divorce paperwork etc. No problem with the UK authorities, now happily married :D

BUT

Unbeknown to me, my lovely lady had reverted her Thai ID card to her maiden name when she got divorced and had not adjusted her passport (would have caused problems with her Italian PR documents).

So, we have a UK marriage certificate with one name on it (from her passport), and a Thai ID card with another. She has the name change thingy that she sumitted at the amphur linking the two names (they are the same person).

I've not even bothered to approach immigration with this data as yet (comes under the 'too hard, do it tomorrow' heading), but I'm going to have to do something soon.

Suggestions anyone, or will the documentation as is just 'work'??

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Make sure everything else is in good order and it may not be a problem as you have to submit her home register and that should notate the name changes - if that has not been updated to her current name I would do so (and that is where you may have a problem). If required get a lawyer to help as it can be corrected but may take signatures from a number of officials.

We have just been through (still going through) a similar situation where my wife has my name in her passport and her maiden name on her ID card. Despite this we were able to buy a house and I have just applied for my first non-O extension. For both things she did not need a passport. We were asked to bring along a witness to say we were married and, not having any friends here yet (recent arrivals) , we used the lady who rented us our car and barely knows us. This however seemed to have more importance than our 15 year mariage papers and son's birth docs.

If her maiden name is on both her tabien bahn and ID card there should be no problem as to her identity in Thailand - the only hitch is proving that she is the same person on the mariage cert. but if you have documentation saying that she used the other name you should be OK. On the day I guess it depends on the immigration guy who deals with you. I suggest bringing other bits of paper showing you are married and photos etc.

Good luck
