I was surprised when I came to Thailand to see that everyone seems to use a metal disc with their brush cutters. I bought a machine 20 years ago (self employed gardener) and only ever used the disc once. The above system was good enough for me, much better than the bobbins (which can drive a man to drink). I would maybe change the strings about once an hour unless I was going along a fence.

Much quicker, and, to my eye, much less dangerous.

My biggest problem 3 years ago when I came back from NZ was that nothing had been done for a long time and most of the scrub and brush was thicker than my thumb.

Now all of that is gone and I can use the nylon cord in most places. There are still a few places that slipped by and still need the steel blade.

Can anyone suggest which Hp size I should be looking for. I have some areas that are going to be tough going, but very little that has never been done before. Mainly I want it to keep paths clear and some grass short. I am only considering a 4 stroke because they keep saying that benzine is going to disappear.

I've got the 4 stroke Honda GX 35 and am very happy with it.....a lot quieter than the 2 stroke...and much less vibration.

I have had it chew through growth 4 foot tall with no problems at all.

My old 2 stroke....my trigger finger used to go numb after only 10 minutes...no problems now with the 4 stroke.

Cheers.

Whoever said that a four stroke uses more gasoline has obviously never used one. The little four stroke Honda we use is now probably 7 years old and still going strong. Even the Thais have not been able to kill it and they can easily kill any mechanical device.

Does the user manual say you can use gasohol ?

My current Honda GX35 is only recomended with Benzine 91 (red star with 91 on it).

I damaged one a few years back using Gasohol.

Are there any current machines that specificly say you can use Gasohol 91 (green star with 91 on it) ?

Sometime back they couldn't get any gasoline in our village so I have been using gasohol 91 since then. I can't tell any difference and have had no problems.

I wished they sold the curved shaft whackers here, and the lighter models Stihl (hope I spelled that correctly! ) you find in north America,... so much easier on the back and arms!

Here I use Honda 4 stoke, not sure of model off hand, around 9000 baht! But been ok for about 4 years unless I lend it to the neighbours... then it always needs fixin!!! sad.png I just wish they would not constantly trigger the revs up and down w00t.gif

I too, use the gasohol 95.

It's interesting in Malaysia all you see is the back pack motors with the cutting wand, that I think would be the cat's meow! I priced them out last year, if i remember about 13,000 baht... but could be a problem with parts! Never seen in Thailand or even in Canada.

Important to drain out or use all gas before storing for a long period! wink.png

I managed to do about 2 hours out the front this morning as it is getting hot again and the sweat was just rolling off me and managed nearly 1 rai before I quit.

I have about 4 more days of 2 hours each before I finish the front.

To be fair I am fat and 66 years old.

The problems I find is that the shaft length is just right for Thais but a little short for me and I have to stoop a bit to get a good cut which makes my back, neck and shoulders ache.

I think you can buy longer shafts from dealer
