I teach pratom levels. In 2010, I was told by my superiors that in 2011, the MOE would not employ teachers who did not have a Thai Teacher's License. This message was very clear and strong. ermm.gifAt the same time, ****** offered the Grad. Diploma in Teaching Profession Program that would provide me with a Thai Teacher's License. I was told upon completion of this course, I would receive my Thai Teacher's License.

In March, 2010, I and another teacher from my school signed up and took the year long course whose fee was 60,000 baht. Now it is after March, 2011. I have hopefully signed the last form concerning the bureaucratic aspect of processing my paperwork. rolleyes.gifI had a question about when I would receive my Teacher's License and asked the HRD department at ******who I should contact. I contacted the person they gave me, asked my question about when I will receive my license and received an ominous reply.sad.gif It sounds like there is the possibility that I will have to take more courses including a course on Thai culture.

Since my completion of the course in March 2011, I have not heard any dire warnings about the rest of the foreign teaching staff not being allowed to work this year because they do not have Thai Teacher's Licenses.annoyed.gif In fact, there is only a rumor mill that provides ever changing messages about the necessity for a Thai Teacher's License for this year. There is no one who will try to find out what is going on with regard to the law at my school.angry.gif I don't speak Thai and don't know who exactly to contact to gain official information or find out what the current laws are for teaching in Thailand. It seems everyone has their own opinion or advice about this topic but no one actually knows what the Thai laws are concerning this! Who can I contact???huh.gif

I trusted the veracity of my superiors' statements about needing the Thai Teacher's License and enrolled in the course because I wanted to follow the laws of Thailand. jap.gifI will keep this post updated as new developments occur.

The website for the Teacher's License Program follows.

In October 2010 someone reported that the Grad. Dip. T.P. from Ramkamhaeng University wouldn't lead to a TCT Teacher License.

I am aware of another teacher who took one of those courses and only found out after finishing that he would not receive the promised license- if our regular viewers will recall, someone claiming to be a staff member at Ramkhamhaeng was himself promoting the course here a while back with the specific goal being to satisfy the TCT; I pointed out at the time that the government itself had not apparently specifically endorsed the course and still apparently hasn't.

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!!

It does appear the more time passes that the TCT is exactly what I feared- a smokey backroom cash-milking scheme for the well-connected, not a serious, well-planned, professional standards organisation working according to transparent guidelines.

I also note that the conditions applied to the RENEWAL of the license (which is apparently only being granted- if ever- in 5 year intervals) are 'ongoing professional development'.

Anyone care to lay odds on this requiring another deposit with the TCT 'trainers' ?

This is correct.

Also, the Thai 'Culture' course has apparently been suspended until further notice. An action instigated by the TCT.

It would appear as though many aspects of the Thai teachers license are under review. (Maybe)

I am still confused. I will have a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in May 2012. Will I be allowed to teach in a government school and get my teacher's license without this crazy 60,000 baht class

If it's a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a major in PE, then you are good to go. If it's just a Bachelor's Degree then you are eligible for a two year waiver.

But this is Thailand, you might just get the full-license.

Best of luck.
