jaideeguy Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 There are a lot of these fairly large sized Chinese cargo boats along the river in Chinag Sean......I saw at least 12 good sized boats loading and unloading at the customs house in CS a week ago and have heard tales of travelers approaching the captain of the boat and offering him passage to go up river and then later return. obvious problems would first be communication with captain and Thai, Chinese immigration. Has anyone done this and can share some tips and experiences??
sunholidaysun1 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 years ago the odd foreigner slipped the captain of one of the boats a few bucks to take him upstream, many others followed . Now I believe you can still do the trip but pay more than a few dollars , as now you get a cabin and food thrown in the price. If it takes a week to get there expect to pay for 1 weeks worth of food and board. Just go to the office at the docks and inquire.

Check out " Four Lens Tour" near the Little Duck Hotel and I think there is an office in town also as he can book you on a Cargo Boat or a Ferry Boat as my wife and I inquired about that a few years ago.
extexthai Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I have looked into this a lot and it is my understanding that while you can get passage up river to China, they (Chines officials) do not let you return the same way. They make you take a ferry back, which is a wee bit on the expensive side. And you would want to get a visa to China prior to leaving Thailand, I think. Perhaps if you have already obtained a re-entry permit for Thailand, it would make things simpler, too. Depends on your current visa status, I suppose. I really want to do this trip and have not, as of yet. As far as going to one of those tour places, they head you in the direction of the passenger ferries and not the cargo ships. Happy sailing...ett

Then you can find out the days the boats sail , the times, the cost etc and What visa's are required .
jaideeguy Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 I should have mentioned that I live in CM, not CR so getting up to enquire is not as easy. Has anyone done the passenger boat thing and can post a trip report with costs/ how long on the river /conditions of boat etc??
sunholidaysun1 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 10 years ago I hired a double canoe from a child molester in Chang Saen. I then Paid for a local savage for 20bht a day to paddle me all the way to China - 300km. From there I stole from the poor people, so that I had something to eat. bullshitted my way through the country and eventually came back here .

They still have charges out against you for stealing the canoe.
