I'm coming down to Samui sometime this month and am getting a bit fed up with the ever increasing prices of beachfront resorts.

Can anyone recommend a cheap resort or hotel on the beach at Chaweng or Lamai?

I'm looking for the following facilities: -

Double room with fan and (warm) shower. (don’t need air)

Car parking – I travel heavy so need to be able to carry stuff back and forth.

Beachfront location or good access and/OR swimming pool

Preferably NOT built of plywood on stilts.

Bar and food? – Thai food

Noisy/quiet – Don’t care

Price less than 1000 baht – until about a year ago I used to pay 450 per night.

Is this possible anymore on Samui?

Failing that has anybody stumbled across a “to-die-for” place anywhere (inland or seaside) on the island recently…

Wishful thinking or what?

Anyone want a lift?

I cant think of many, although I know Amity resort near Hinta Hinya has decent rooms, on the beach with car parking, but no pool, small restaruant with run of the mill and a nice place to sit and meet people for drinks in the evening. I think their rooms are from about 150 baht to 1000 baht.

Chaweng Garden has rooms below 1.000,-Baht. Not too sure about the car parking aspect.

In Ban Rak the Mermaids resort has good deals, no problems with parking, straight on the beach, pool, restaurant etc.

Rooms acroos the road are 400,-Baht only.

To die for places tend to come with a price tag nowadays.

I was there a couple of weeks back and stayed at Evergreen Resort for 900 per night - it was ok. You can get it for about 600 I think if you don't want air con. Good location too.

If you just turn up without pre-booking you can get many guesthouse rooms for anything as low as 350.

Last time I went there in August I stayed at the P&P Resort, right on the beach with Parking for residents, security gaurd tends to keep a good eye out for your car too. I paid 900 baht last time round, I got a good deal though as I have been there a few times and know the staff. Walk in is normally best.

Downside is check out, they kick you out at 10 am, sometimes they will knock on your door at 8.30 am asking if your checking out ! Very annoying :o

Certainly the best one around for parking.

I stayed in a place in chewang, called conotel, i think. It was across the road from the piza hut. There was no pool, but i parked up an allie beside it. I got a room with a double bed, shower,TV, fan and air for 450 a night in june (although my gf got this price, i think it was 500 normally still pretty cheap). It was beside a Club with a Katoy show everninght so from 22.00 to 00.00, i got to listen to "I will surive", "I did it my way" ect.. But centeral location and reasonably good room. You can't really expect much better for 450 a night. I have certinaly paid more for worse rooms.

stayed there before --one Xmas in fact, not bad...I used to stay at Samui Royal Beach next door but that has gone from 450 to 2400 baht in the space of one year!

And changed management!

I know of at least 1 place where the 'keymoney' went from 500.000 for a 3 year contract to 2.000.000. Monthly rent from 30.000 baht to 80.000 baht a month. Naturally the one who leased the 'resort' (with an option to extend another 3 years) and fixed it up went mad and finally accepted that it was out of his reach and left back to his west European country. Prices before 600 baht a night after 1500 baht. The only one who is making decent money with this resort is the landowner.

Anyone still want a small resort for rent?

Wilko how much was the ferry to take your motor over and back?

Ok - I just lost my whole posting so I'll write it again!!!

I usually get the ferry from Don Sak; that’s a little further along the coast from Surathani, it’s about a one hour trip instead of hour and a half but it takes about half an hour to get there.

There are 2 companies about half a mile apart, that go from Don Sak and I seem to remember paying (in April) 560 for me and car. I think some charge by the number of people others by the car. Whatever it ain’t dear…more than Koh Chang but it’s further.

My g/f pointed out on the ferry to Samui after having done the Koh Chang crossing that the Samui one wasn’t as good as the water was deeper and there were dragons – sure…

I’ve never booked but had to wait about 4/5 hours once in high season to get on…and the last ferry is quite early….maybe they don’t sail in the dark.

I don’t get a return as it leaves my options open for how I get back.

If you’re taking 4WD there are some great drives into the hills – nothing too dangerous. You can just about drive over the top on concrete tacks and the occasional mud slide. There are one or two cafes, restaurants and even rooms to stay up there too. Drive up to Uncle Nimm’s Magic garden and turn left, follow the signs to Blue something mountain view restaurant……Watch out in the wet season though.

Thanks very much wilko,

Seems to me to be quite a deal, i thought it would be much more expensive then that, so that is good news, I cannot wait to get my bum over there.

The life of riley!

Cheers :o

have stayed for the past few years at Chaweng Gardens Beach in front of Burger King. Price is 1000 with a 10% discount if you stay for more than a week. We always had a beach side room. There are only a few up on stilts! the rest are at ground level. It is quiet and away from the noise of the main drag and the restaurant is good with evening bbq every night and the usual Eagles Greatest Hits even though i think they had Robbie Williams this year!! The rooms are cleaned every day and have the usual shower room, cable tv, mini bar, ac etc.

It also has a security guard who seems to sit in a deck chair all night staring at the sea in his full uniform regalia but does make the place feel safer.

Thanks for all the replies....still haven't got a date for going yet, but still dissapointed at how much everything has gonee up on Samui. Not as bad as boring old Koh Chang...what a disaster that place is!
