The EMPRESS Hotel - super best value for the money - 200 baht for lunch if you have a "gold" card. It gets you 15 percent off and it costs 150 baht to sign up. Eventhough you don't have a card, the value is still great. Numerous selection of Thai and Western food. They even have Japanese food, and dim som, great deserts also.

Yes, generally good, but get there before 12 for the best selection. Great value on the sushi alone.

Hey, Yesterday man! Why is the "American company" so vital to mention in connection with the Holiday Inn? No guarantee of anything. Look at Haliburton. Get a world view whydoncha?

"get a world view" Whos, yours? No thank you since you seem confused.

The mention of the Holiday Inn as American ..... A huge American hotel brand know world wide..That bothers you?

You, for whatever strange reason, mention " Haliburton" which is a county in Ontario ,Canada... So help us all out here....

What "Halliburton" has to do with the Holiday inn seems to be some personal view you are brewing.

Let me help you out some Halliburton is a oilfield company multi national with its head offices in the U.A.E.

While the Holiday Inn is a hotel chain....

Please tell all us T.V. readers how this relates to a good buffet in C.M.please.

Your point is?

Not much to do with buffets but more interesting is the discussion re hotel ownership.

Westin, Meridien, Sheraton, Four Points, W, St Regis, Luxury Collection, ALoft are all hotel brands owned by US company Starwood

Hilton (US, now, having been UK owned for ex-US hotels) owns Waldorf-Astoria, Conrad, Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Homewood, Hilton Garden Inn and obviously Hilton brands.

Marriott (US) owns Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Marriott, Courtyard, Springhill Suites and Fairfield Inn

InterContinental Hotels Group (UK company since mid-1980s) owns Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge & Candlewood Suites

The world's largest hotel group (in terms of number of hotels, IHG claims the most number of rooms) is Wyndham primarily with their Days Inn, Super 8 & Ramada brands.

So any grumbles about the Holiday Inn in CM should be blamed on the Brits. But then again most hotel companies do not own the physical properties which are normally run as stand alone or chains of franchises, and the brand owner takes the annual brand royalty.

If you really want the best buffet (money no object) go for the Canadian owned option...the Four Seasons. Get the 25% discount Gourmet Club card and it just becomes expensive rather than prohibitively expensive.

Don't mean to quibble, but the Holiday Inn is an American "Brand" but the hotel owners and staff are mostly the same for the last ten years and the buffet is about the same as when the "Brand" was the "The Westin" then morphed to "The Sheraton" and now "The Holiday Inn". My bet is the kitchen staff hasn't changed much over the years. The owner 10 years ago, when it was the Westin, was a Pakistani and when he died, one of his wives took over, however, the Managing Director has remained the same all these years, Manuel, who is Swiss and a really nice guy.

He did move to Bangkok a few years ago. Is he back now?

Sawasdee Khrup, TV CM Friends,

As long as we're on the topic of buffets, kindly allow us to clink-the-chains of buffets-past, and ask whatever happened to the supposed re-opening of the Nang Ngual down in the Nong Hoi area, on Thanon Kaw Klang ?

For 89 baht, once-upon-a-time, that used be our favorite (both when we had taste buds, and after we lost them).

best, ~o:37;

Whether the Friday buffet at Holiday Inn is the brain child/result of American, Pakistani, Thai, Catholic or whoever, it is a good experience for what you pay. Halliburton was mentioned and they also have vast experience in providing buffet selections around the world (they may have Texan cooks for all I know), but they are known for Friday night steak and tail. For TV members to judge food/buffet by the nationality of the owner, cook, etc, of any establishment would indicate their lack of adventure, culinary tastes, and even knowledge, if I may be so bold as to suggest this.

If our resident expert on food in CM, (where art thou UG) based his opinion on the various nationalities of the owners, help, cooks, etc, we could revert back to the old food ratings/guide.

I went to Sunday Holiday Inn buffet , so they have one Friday night as well?

I have to ask what are you talking about Halliburton buffet?/ The only buffet they offer is a buffet of death using their paid private army as they search out oil fields around the world.Halliburton is an oilfield serach out develope company huge. I have no clue why the other TV boy or girl brought up halliburton but now you do the same...what gives here anyway?

All In favor of a steak with some after dinner tail but never heard of Halliburtan buffet in Texas or eslewhere . It doesn't exist.

Rather simple.... Up to 2007, Halliburton owned KBR, KBR had the LOGCAP contract in Iraq & Afghanistan, under this contract they were serving almost 150,000 troops and an unknown amount of civilians 3 meals/day buffet style in the DFAC's. :bah:

The reference to Halliburton buffets relates to their ex-subsidiary KBR (Kellogg Brown Root) that had a contract to feed, transport and launder for the US Army worldwide, and thus provided many a field kitchen (buffet might be a bit of a stretch).

Also I think you may be confusing Halliburton (more renowned for "alleged" bribery, soft no-compete contracts, building internment camp similar to Gitmo Bay, and very close working relationships with the Cheney and Bush clans), with Blackwater (now XE Services) renowned for a "robust" approach to PMC (private military company) work in Iraq, Afghanistan etc Halliburton do the logistics tail, Blackwater does the teeth.

Well someone figured out why I mentioned Halliburton/buffet. For the non believers, today's military often have a choice of food which could be called a buffet. The next question for the all knowing ones, that originally mentioned Halliburton on this topic and yesterday, may be, what does Catholic, mentioned in my post have to do with Friday?

OK, I'll bite, should probably know but don't so ........ what is the answer? :(

Actually I don't know that much about it, except I have heard of Catholics being referred to as " snappers " as in mackerel snappers, but I don't know any dates and I can't quite follow what was actually being asked about catholics and fridays and halliburton and Iraq and hotels and I think there was also something in there about buffets.

Catholics stopped having to eat fish on Fridays in the 1960s. Boy was I happy. :D

Fish was never manatory on a Friday, it was the obligation to abstain from meat that made fish the popular alternative. the rules for fasting and abstinence in the United States are:

 • Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent
 • Every person between the age of 18 and 60 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
 • Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on all other Fridays of the year, unless he or she substitutes some other form of penance for abstinence.

Now what penance would be acceptable in this lovely neck of the woods? <_<

Meat free Fridays for Catholics is an act of abstinence not penance, big difference. Abstain is to give up something as an act of faith, penance is to seek forgiveness for some sin.

BTW did you know Catholics in the UK are known as "left footers", or so a Brit friend once told me.Is that true and why?

the gold standard is probably the Grandview hotel, IMO

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'gold standard' but the quality is as good (often better) than a single plated meal (higher price) in restaurants around Chiang Mai.

For the price, quality and the amount you can eat (if you want), I think The Grandview represents excellent value.

There is always a good selection of hot meat dishes, veg, pasta, cold cuts, soups, salads and an extensive dessert counter, which can be eaten in very nice clean surroundings.

:D you must be new to Chiang Mai forum?

I'm not sure what murdered minorities have to do with food threads. Most of us are just looking for food like we grew up on.

No kidding , what the heck is going on here?? "murdeous, third world" etc etc. huh? What is going on with these few TV people?.

Went to the Holiday Inn lunch buffet today (Monday). Excellent value for 199 baht, which included water, VAT and service charge. They said it's a special price for low season. Don't go expecting the Sunday lunch buffet; all the food appears to be locally sourced, but they do have an assortment of western and Japanese foods in addition to Thai foods, plus some roast meats and excellent desserts. A much larger selection than Grandview, definitely a notch above Grandview, but the price is a notch above Grandview, too.

It's nice to know there are inexpensive, well-produced, excellent lunch buffets in elegant settings on each side of town.

Great information. I was not aware that the HI was serving a lunch buffet. Thanks.
