Can anyone tell me what I need to buy and ideally where to get a gizmo that will enable me to run more than one monitor from one PC.

Obvioulsy the PC has only one outlet so I assume I need some sort of box that has one going in and 2 going out ?

Hope I've explained correctly, any advice appreciated.

If you have a laptop then you can use the blue outlet vga out that is attached to the side of the laptop,if you have a computer then you need to have a second graphics card that slots inside the computer

Exactly what do you want to do? You can run multiple monitors off a single VGA output with a VGA splitter (Pantip et al), but of course they will all display the same image.

If you want different images you need a new graphics card that can support multiple monitors.

Alternatively there are USB - VGA adaptor thingies that work quite well to add multiple monitors to a PC with only one VGA port.

Do you have a desktop or a lappie?

Got it.

Does your current card have DVI or HDMI as well as VGA?

If you don't know post a picture of the back of your PC, you may be able to simply plug in another monitor.

On the back we have 3 multi pin sockets, 1 is the standard blue one for the monitor, the other looks like a male version of that, same size and shape, and finally one that has about a 24 pin like the peripheral ports that used to be used for printers etc.Definately no HDMI etc

assumed you need an original 1920x1024, 21-inch desktop PLUS an extended 1920x1024, 21-inch desktop. first, check your display card if multiple ports ( VGA, DVI . . . ) are available. second, an extended desktop of ( 2x1920 )x1024 demands a lot of graphic processing capability, check the specifications of the display card too. otherwise, the graphic speed sometimes even the main CPU speed will be significantly slow down ( depends on applications you are running ).

in most cases, the most straightforward solution - buy a new display card with good processing capability. for critical graphic applications, your 2x 21-inch LCD screens should be from same brand same production batch. matching LCD colour side by side, a big headache !

i am using these since years. not extend the desktop (which is possible too) but to run different programs which require different resolutions on individual screens.

small disadvantage (which does not matter in my case) is that the reaction is quite sluggish.
