Jailed Jatuporn denied release to attend MP registration

The Criminal Court yesterday rejected red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan's request to be let out of jail so he could register as a Pheu Thai party-list candidate.

The court ruled that a party leader or his authorised representative could apply on behalf of candidates on the party list, so Jatuporn had no need to make the registration himself.

Jatuporn's attorney Winyat Chartmontri said his team would try again to win temporary release for Jatuporn.

An ex-MP for the Pheu Thai Party, Jatuporn was recently remanded on the charge of terrorism in connection with last year's unrest and riots in Bangkok that left 92 people dead and some 2,000 injured.

Before the recent dissolution of the House of Representatives, he had enjoyed parliamentary immunity, while his fellow red-shirt leaders were refused bail and held in custody.

In the request for bail, Jatuporn's attorney cited the precedent of detained red-shirt leader Korkaew Pikulthong obtaining court permission to register as a Pheu Thai candidate in a Bangkok by-election last year.

Applications for party-list candidacy opens today and will close on Monday. Jatuporn is one of Pheu Thai's 125 party-list candidates.

At Bangkok Remand Prison, more than 300 red shirts, including some senior figures such as Thida Thawornseth and Nattawut Saikua, visited Jatuporn and another red-shirt leader, Nisit Sinthuprai.

Jatuporn and Nisit recently had their bail revoked for violating the conditions of temporary release but could not receive visitors because of the five public holidays.

Chief warden Sopon Thitithammaphruek said Jatuporn appeared to be adapting better to prison life after spending a few days there. The visitor schedule for Jatuporn would be arranged to minimise the impact on other visitors, he said.

A prison source said only 200 visitors would be allowed each day and their relatives would get an extra 15 minutes to see Jatuporn and Nisit.

I think TAWP only proposed to sent those red-shirt singers around so you could judge for yourself whether it disturbed the peace and quiet of your neighbourhood or not. A friendly gesture amongst members here at TV.

I think we can judge that as a Freudian slip by phiphidon, having Red Shirts sent to ones street could indeed be seen as a threat if one knows how they like to behave...

But the reason I asked is of course crystal clear: Whoever says that noise-pollution cannot fall under a human right to not be subjected to needlessly needs a concert to be held next door for a weekend or two...

I dunno ... Jatuporn is pretty high up on the party-list.

But that might be to satisfy other elements of the PTP who want to see him up there more than Thaksin, unless you think the PTP is far more united than that. If they are that united (behind Thaksin, I suppose), then either Thaksin wants him up there or Jatuporn's just got too much support in general to be ignored, or both.

And with k. Jatuporn on position 7 of the PTP party list for MP candidates he is bound to return as MP which implies a new bail request will lead to release on the grounds of his parliamentary immunity. So after the elections he can be his usual self again
