I wondered why Pattaya was so noisy. It must be all the squeaky people here. I heard a story once that a guy was able to survive here on 10,000 baht a month and I said it was impossible. I've changed my mind. I think most of the people who have replied here could survive on half that.

It is interesting to see how balloon chasers think.

This nonsense about how poor people look down on you for giving them a decent salary or tip is most enlightening.

I agree UG. Interesting to note how the rich justify their greed.

When i went to University all of the rich kids i knew with the exception of one made Lincoln cry because they squeezed each penny so hard.

My wife and I pay 300b directly for my inlaws maid to pop over and clean our apt and do washing and ironing. I'd like to pay more but MIL doesn't want us to pay her too much, after being here a while I can understand how in some cases being more generous than the norm is interpreted only as weakness.... If this seems silly, i agree but it's the way things are and we,ve had relaible and trustworthy assistance from our maid for 2 years.

Advice to the OP: I wouldn't do anything which involves a loss of income for the maid. A direct hire of one day per week 500b direct to the maid (assuming that an agent previously took 50%) may be the best solution. Alternatively give here a little more to do, i.e. Ironing, washing.....

On the other subject of tipping: I have to say that I've rarely seen Thai's not tip.... Tipping rarely occurs to flamboyant proportions but the small change and 20b is often the norm depending on the size of the total bill. My inlaws often tip the waiter / waitress directly 100b for good service during a meal for 4 or 5 of us.

Nealy all my Thai friends tip a waiter 100b for good service in a club.

While tipping is not expected in Thailand it is most certainly appreciated by the staff......

My hubby needs to go on biz trip often so during his absence, our home will be quite clean because I am a very tidy person.

Get rid of the maid and make your husband clean up after himself.

It all depends who is getting the tip.

A relatively poor shop-worker being tipped would be grateful. A relatively rich shop-owner getting a tip would probably think the tipper is an idiot.

Both would say thank you though.

Another point for the OP:

The maid possibly secures other work through the agency, employing her directly may impact her potential to secure other work through the same agent.

That is quite possible. We know that she also has at least one other family to work for.

Will gather more info

Now I remember once we were invited to a very nice spa center not far from the city hall. The thai colleauge paid a handsome tip to the staff.

I guess the mainstream Thais pay good tips at those classy restaurants and clubs, etc. Well, just my personal opinion. Am still exploring :jap:

If the maid is employed by an agency just tell the agency you don't want her when hubby goes away and then increase the frequency when he's back again.

You can always tell them you're both going away.

I dont have or need a maid though my missus' sister comes in twice a fortnight to polish the floors, clean the windows, bath the dogs and minor maintenance (change blown light bulbs etc) when required, good value for 500b I reckon, the missus takes care of everything else.

From my experience in quite some developing countries, I have an impression that:

The genuine mainstream people are nice and decent.

The poor lower class people are also humble and honest.

The bad impression and unpleasant things are moslty caused by those who are exposed too much to city life and the changing world. Their mind and will are not ready for this so they lost their innocence...
