Anyone from CM been up to Luang Prabang?

I am looking at a couple of days there in January, and would be grateful for any hotel recommendation.

My research suggests I can get a visa at LP airport - but what about a Thai national?

Anyone should be able to get a 15 day Lao visa the the airport:

As for hotels, just like in CM, it depends on your budget. The Mano Guesthouse can't be beat in the 400 baht range.

Visa on arrival is US$30 for 2 weeks. Thai nationals visa free. LPQ has heaps of good value for money accommodation. My fave gh is the Souansavan. But what sort of budget do you have & what standard are you looking for? Upmarket hotels / ghouses are most likely fully booked for Nov- Dec-Jan from what I can gather - LPQs doing real well in the high season & deservedly so.
