Pheu Thai: 300-baht minimum wage realistic

news2011-07-15_11-02-23_255407150009_Plodprasop1.JPG

BANGKOK, 15 July 2011 (NNT) – The Pheu Thai Party affirms that its plan to raise minimum wage to 300 baht per day can be implemented, and it will forge ahead with the plan once the party becomes the government.

Pheu Thai Party Deputy Leader Plodprasop Suraswadi said the minimum wage increase is an urgent agenda that must be done within one year after the party has successfully formed a new government. He assured that the policy is not just a political campaign as criticised by many sides.

Nevertheless, Mr Plodprasop admitted that the 300-baht minimum wage might not be put into effect across the country simultaneously as some entrepreneurs are not ready to shoulder higher operating costs; therefore, the party will prepare assistance measures for them.

The Pheu Thai Party will be studying economic structures in different areas in order to identify pilot zones for the minimum wage increase.

The deputy leader added that the minimum wage would be raised to 1,000 baht per day within nine years in order to keep pace with Singapore’s economy as well as in an effort to wipe out poverty in Thailand within 10 years.

EC expected to endorse Yingluck, Abhisit Tuesday

The Election Commission is expected to endorse the election victory of Pheu Thai prime minister-in-waiting Yingluck Shinawatra and outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva next Tuesday.

EC commissioner Sodsri Satayatham, who is charge of political party affairs, said Friday that she expected that the consideration of complaints against Yingluck and Abhisit would be completed on Tuesday.

Sodsri said she has been informed by the investigative arm of the EC that there was no need to invite Yingluck and Abhisit to testify or to demand more evidence from the two. She said the investigators had informed her that they had received sufficient information and details.
