When was the last time you were up at the Golden Triangle? It is right across the river, on the Laos side. PP

I was there a few months ago but just hung around and watched them load and unload the chinese cargo boats. Not sure how or why I missed the casino but for some reason never even noticed it. Also found this article with a little more info. Have you been to the casino and if so, what did you think? Is Chiang Saen where the new highway from China is to enter Thailand or is that chiang Khong? Thanks for info.

You cross the river just past on your left the giant Gold Budda..costs us about 300 baht to go over( if I remember correctly)..Very quiet in the mornings but gets busier as the day goes on..thais go over for a lot less. You can stay over night for about 1500 baht..I played Black jack..Lots of one armed bandits..seemed safe...many Thais go over on a regular basis..Been a couple of times to play.

Last time I went there was over a year ago. The casino was one really small room with mainly older women playing baccarat. It was a bit rubbish to be honets. From the Independent article, it seems to have grown a bit. Not surprising really, it was one great big building site when we went over!

There's a Chinese trading company based just outside Sob Ruak who will take you over for free, no stamps in the passports, they drop you in the casino and will then take you to the small market a bit further up.

I imagine it's grown a lot since we were there, certainly looked like they were very serious about making it a huge complex. I still can't work out where they think all the people will come from? Thai people from Bangkok? No, they'll go to Cambodia, Western tourists? There aren't enough of them up there. Chinese tourists? Maybe, I don't know enough about the geography to comment about that one.

They must be very confident though, the place is HUGE!

it's possible now to cross the border legally at the golden triangle - for example for a VISARUN - for swiss citiziens it's free to enter laos for 15 days and thais with passport also free for 30 days - it's very easy - just pay for the boat to cross the short distance over to laos - you must NOT dealing with the king roman group - the only "small problem" in kapok city is - to travel on direction huay xai - but there are minibuses/limousines to rent or take the bus direction sipsongpanna - jinghong/yunnan/china - or cross over with your own bycycle - the best way to explore laos...! - here are some photos and videos from our trip into laos:
