Hi all,

My International Driving License expires soon so I figure I should get my Thai license. (yes I know I probably should have gotten one after 3 months...)

From what I can gather from reading on here is that since I have a car and motorcycle license from Australia, and have car and motorcycle endorsements on my IDL, I shouldn't need to do a practical test?

Just watch a video and then do a written test.

Is there anything I need to bring with me other than:

1. Passport

2. Work Permit

3. Australian DL

4. International DL

eg like the medical certificate where they certify that they have taken your blood pressure and asked you if there is anything wrong with you :)

Also is anyone able to describe the DMT building I need to go to?

I understand it is near the airport and near the Ministry of Labour (unsure of exact name) where I went to get my work permit. But as I can't read Thai, I'm unsure which of the many government buildings it is. So any help in identifying it would be appreciated.

Lastly, are they open on the weekend or only M-F?

thanks,

Rich

Hi Riggi!

You will need those things you mention-and the medical certificate+2 or 3 pictures.

I have to renew my driver licence, after d. 22 of August-so if you like, you can pick a day in next week, and we can pick you up some where in town, and drive you there-or you can come to our house and we drive out there.

Just give me a PM,so I know what you want.

Yes you need a medical certificate and a residence certificate from Maesai Imm. (house book, lease, landlord ID. depending upon your circumstances).

Not good with directions but here goes. Go east on the road opposite the King Mengrai statue. Go till you see a large buffalo on the left and turn left on wide road. Go over the bridge and past two schools. Take a right at the stoplight. Go past several building till you see a violet? building on the right the entrance is the second entry before the road bears left.:jap:

Do not need pictures anymore since they have gone to modern laminated types.

Start with a big smile and Sabai dii mai, cop. But remember, as with everything and anything to do, dealing with Thai government bureaucracies....it depends on the day, time of day and of course, who you draw to get to help you. In Phayao, they only wanted to see my passport and that was all. I had all those aforementioned documents with me, but wasn't asked for them. Had I gotten someone else, they would have probably wanted all of that and then some. This has happened with drivers licensing, immigration and foreign affairs. There is no standard and no way to tell what your fate arranged service provider might want. Best to cover your butt with the obvious and have everything imaginable with you if you do want to make multiple trips. And don't bother with bringing your own duplicate copies....they have relatives manning the copying services that they want you to help support. Now, I do have to say that it is way faster than what it would take you to get it done stateside, pending they only want what is needed/expected. They gave an eye test including peripheral vision test and a reaction time test on a make shift brake pedal and red light in a box. And that was pretty much it. They gave me both, MC and 4 wheel vehicle licenses in less than 5 minutes. The first one is good for one year and the next one you do will be good for five. Have fun! ett

Thanks for the info guys. Very helpful.

Thanks also for the offer of a lift Brian, but I should be OK to find the place myself from the excellent directions above.

I've been to the work permit office a couple of times and also am familiar with the are, just not which building is which :)

Cheers,

Rich
