Mae Sai Immigration? (visa Run)

Featured Replies

Am meeting mates up north and am planning a Visa run to Mae Sae at the same time.

I think I've read that the immigration office has moved so that it's now right at the border/bridge. Can anyone confirm this? If so, I could take a songtaew from the bus station direct to the border.

Also, the was the furore over needing to show cash at the border. I was curious as to how strongly this is being enforced. Yes, I have the funds, but am concerned about the security of walking around with people knowing that I have 20k in my pocket.

I know there are other, older threads on Visa runs at Mae Sai, but none really up to date.

Cheers!!!

Yep, you are still ment to have the cash etc, but I have never been asked to show it.I've also wandered around with 20k in my pocket and never felt any threat to my security. :o

When I was last there it was only 10k they wanted to see. After a DVD frenzy I had far less than that and showed them my airline ticket, as if to say "look i must be able to afford 10K if I can fly here". He said I must show him next time.

If push came to shove there is an atm on the left (on the Thai side). I heard a tale that someone had to go across and take out 10K. Nobody I have ever known.

It's a nice run. Enjoy.

The requirement at any crossing is 10k (20k family) for 30 day entry without visa or 20k (40k family) for visa entry.

Last week, I did a visa run to the Mae Sai border.

Got a green VIP bus from Chiang Mai at 8am. Price was approx 620bt return. Journey was 4hrs with a stop at Chiang Rai - stop lasted as long as it took for other passengers to use toilets/buy food.

Immediately got songtaew for 8bt direct to the border. Got stamped out, left passport with 250bt at Burmese office on the right side of the road. They gave me a ticket to collect my passport later.

Had a walk through the market, then came back to collect my passport before making my way to bus stop by motorcycle to get the 2.15pm bus back to Chiang Mai.

I saw the signs for visitors to show cash. They were very clear and evident that visitors had to show either 10k or 20k at the immigration. I didn't get asked at all.

I did see officers checking bags on entry though, maybe a bit worrying for those splashing out on DVD's in the market!
