Just got a 'phone call from TOT. They said that in future if you download torrents for 24 hours continuously they'll cut your connection. You only need to disconnect and reconnect to continue downloading. Apparently it's something to do with people downloading then going away for a few days. (At least that was the explanation.)

Of course, this sounds totally pointless and crazy - but of course, this is TOT we're talking about. But has anyone else had a similar 'phone call?

never had a phone call, my computer is on 24/7. What I do with the bandwidth I pay for is up to me, they supply the service I use it how I like, when I like.

<deleted> ?? did they really call you ? or are you paranoid for downloading too much porno.

Yes, they really called me - less than 2 hours ago.

And, like all other torrent users, I only use the service to download legal content.

What is this "porno" of which you speak?

Never got a call, but it shouldn't be much of a workaround. Most torrent program's let you set times where it can or can not run. Just set it to stop for 5 mins everyday.

I think over 99 percent of the content on torrents is illegal. How could you possibly need to keep downloading 24/7 if you're only getting legal content?

I'm no techie but even I can see the point is being missed ??

Its the illegal downloading that pushes prices up and service down. Just be happy with a decent speed from TOT without pushing the boundaries.

Same with guys moaning that they only get 3MGB download speeds-who needs quicker than this ??

A pretty obvious point, it about fair usage. Someone who downloads torrents 24/7 is using up the bandwidth, significantly more so than the 'normal user'... People who download to such an extent do ruin it for others....

In other countries I've seen the internet usage alter as people are charged based on not only their download speed, but their monthly consumption (i.e. how many GB they download on average per month).

If ToT don't like people using so much bandwidth they should intorduce capped plans, me personally I smash them down for the 12 hrs Iam at work each day, nothing unusual to drop down 10gb and on the days I don't it's because I slept in and did not have time to load up my download manager.

I guess we are just looking at it from different sides. The contract I signed allows me to use an allotment of bandwidth of 12Mbs, no caps, and no usage premiums. I don't think its right for them to come to me now and tell me that they are limiting that usage without recourse. This is the companies problem for overselling their product. They should not be selling additional plans without updating the infrastructure first.

"Pushing the boundary" is assuming that a boundary was preset, otherwise, I'm using the service I paid for.

Look at it from another point of view. If you were renting an apartment and the landlord told you "from now on you can only stay here 6 days a week" Seriously???

I think you need to reread his post

+1 for post #10

Its time the companies started to deliver even close to the glossy brochure speeds they charge you for.

Perhaps you could sell back the unused bandwidth of other users who want to clunk along at 512k, and think that downloading a photo from email is adequate for consumption....lol

You've obviously never tried on-line gaming then!

You need a fast connection for this if you want to be competitive.

It's not really a kids thing before anyone suggests so otherwise there wouldn't be 18+ 15+ PG game ratings.

Not something I do any more as the internet is to unreliable in this country.

My computer is on 24/7 as torrents are not just about downloading but seeding for others, it is not take take take, but give back. I usually seed to a ratio of 20-1 (meaning I download 1GB I give back 20GB).

Really you're sure about that ??

So how come I can run a full online trading account with split second execution with Edge ?? For 2 months without a single trade not executed ??

@beano2274 @AyG what kind of downloading speed are you getting on the ToT line ?

Getting 200+ speed for downloads on a 7MB line

Is 200+ constant rate you are getting ?

I am on 3bb most of the days are 30 - 50+ occasionally 100 max. Do you think it's 3bb or something wrong with my setting.

Posted

there are many factors it could be, including the amount of seeders online at the time and how much they actually have set up in their configurations.

There seems to be some issue. I get max downloads of over 900K on a 9Mb 3BB line, over 1,200K on another 3BB line and over 1,100K on a True 10Mbs line.

Assuming that you have enough speed coming from seeders, you should be seeing much higher speeds.

I have check and tweak everything that i could, port forward and my port is good, green signal. Using transmission on mac tried utorrent and the result worst than transmission.

I usually gets about 15 - 20+ seeders. Now it says Downloading from 21 of 32 peers, does that mean i have 21 seeders ?

Actually it's not "up to you " as you may possibly find out from your ISP or the Thai Internet regulatory body.

maybe true, but I am not complaining as I pay for a 2MB service and get 7MB.

Because executing a trade, and/or updating a few stock quotes uses an infinitesimal amount of bandwidth compared to updating graphics and status for multiple remote game players.

Peers are other people like you that do not have the complete file, but are sharing what they have..... Seeders have the complete file.

You also should check your settings as far as how many simultaneous downloads/uploads you are allowing, and the maximum number of connections.

Not neccesarily. You are getting from 21 others but leechers also upload to you as well as seeders.

What possible need would anyone have for high speed internet if they weren't downloading torrents?

All the legit stuff can be done on dial-up.
