Lite Beer
Plodprasob urges govt to tell truth Science Minister Plodprasob Surassawadee Sunday urged the government to tell all the truth to Bangkokians and predicted that all parts of Bangkok will be flooded more than a month. Plodprasob, the head of the National Disaster Warning Centre, said the government should immediately give all the truth to the people without worrying that the truth would cause panic among the public members. Plodprasob said the people should be warned as early as possible about flooding of their areas and the government must clearly provide refuge for the people and their evacuation places should be as close to their homes as possible. Plodprasob said the government should also update the information for the public every 15 minutes so that they would know where they could go to escape flooding. -- The Nation 2011-10-

zydeco
All other issues associated with this guy aside, he's actually making good sense, here. The sort of thing that should be basic with any government emergency preparedness agency. But still, at least we finally got it out there.
thaicbr
Its the old tell the truth and you get panic versus keep things relatively calm and people arent prepared conundrum. That's true but if they give clear and concise bulletins with instructions then that's how it should be..... Not really what HAS been happening. There should be one source for this.......... Not a table full of idiots as is now.

serenitynow
And down the rabbit hole we go. It's the right message delivered by the most unlikely of persons. Ironically, if the government ever decides to tell the truth, the citizens would be calling for Plodprasob's head, among others. Or am I having an acid flashback? animatic
Accurate facts are clearly the better choice. 1 ) People know it's a disaster, they'd be panicing now if they only just realized this. THEY KNOW... NOW tell them what to do. 2 ) Uninformed means artificially ignorant, more will go the wrong way into harms way, more will not move until it is much more dangerous to do so. What kind of reaction can you expect when they find out the've been lied to consistently? 3 ) if you want anything like reconciliation, or more simply 'during the recover the knives stay sheathed', tell all people straight facts, otherwise this plays into the hands of ideologues. 4 ) Single Source Consistent Info. And use EVERY resource at you availability to get the SAME ACCURATE message out to as many citizens as possible. 5 ) Start thinking/planning NOW for about 2 weeks from now, and 2 months from now, and start getting THAT recovery message out too. And expect it to still be affecting millions 6 months from now. 6 ) Forewarned is forearmed. People with hope don't make drastic decisions like violent robbery, suicide or murder because they see no other hope of long term survival, because they are LIVING IN THE DARK, because the powers that be don't show them reality. It is possible he has been telling the truth, but they didn't want him saying anything and did a full court press to counter-message as soon as he opened his gob. Then again.... he could be who we think, and a stopped clock tells correct time twice a day. Edited October 23, 2011 by animatic

Everywhere the full propaganda is running that the Democrats are doing it to a) discredit the government or to kill the people who didn't vote for them. + the PM just pressed in Thaksins brother in law as chief of police. That should make the reconciliation point clear, or?

TAWP
Yes, there has been reports of relief-bags going mainly to known Red Shirts in some districts. But what is more reliably established, and reported in length by Thai PBS yesterday, is that migration-workers in several districts up-north have been completely overlooked/purposefully ignored. They had interviews with a big group of workers from Burma/Myanmar etc.

oldgeezer
The fact that "The floods will last for weeks" is probably true and interesting. The real question is when will the water pressure against the temporary and permanent dams and gates be below levels of danger. And what is happening with the levels, as there has not been much rain and gates have been open for a couple of days.

michaeljordan
Like us all, I am no genius when it comes to the water flow going past Bangkok on both sides toward the ocean , but like all of you , I can see. I looked at the photo image of 6 feet of warer sitting north of the city and it stretches 300 miles. Now given that water flows downhill, we all know that right, it will go to the lowest areas in Bangkok, and some of them are actually below sea level, before going out to sea using natures natural drainage systems. Pumps work great in normal circumstances for Bangkok but this no normal situation is it. The ground water is of course filled to the surface now. Bangkok is flooding from the bottom up. We all know ground water can come up, here in Bangkok. It does so whenever we have a heavy rain. 300 miles of water will not be able to moves all around Bangkok. Do you think any nation could have, given the short time, just months, prevented this flood? if you do, you are terribly unaware. The Netherlands flooded when the rivers from central Europe went over their banks. America had some areas under water for months when the Mississippi river flooded. Now has the government been completely honest or consistent in telling the people that the flood is coming to Bangkok? NO But is there anyone in Bangkok who is not aware of the possibility of the city being completely flooded? NO The top priorities now should be keeping disease from breaking out and feeding people and giving them clean water to drink. Perhaps more time should be spent telling people where they can go for help because there are lots of people who cannot run from this trouble and what is just an inconvenience for those with money is life threatening for the poor and sick and old. Thailand did nothing wrong. Quit crying about small trouble and give information that can help us all. After the wreck is over we can blame. Look at the Thai people trying to smile in the face of disaster. It is inspiring to me and if you get up from your desk, you could go help people. It would be more rewarding then sitting in your nice apartment or home talking trash about government people. Do you think anyone wanted this? GazR
Proprietor at local eaterie was telling customers early this morning how outraged she was when one of her customers tried to tell people yesterday that the King was behind this flooding and his intention was to discredit the government. Fortunately, only Reds believe other Reds these days - and a day of reckoning may be closer than we think. The other good news is that if the Reds are gonna try and burn down Bangkok again, they probably won't try it for a month or so until everything's dried out. They had interviews with a big group of workers from Burma/Myanmar etc. As the North of BKK has been flooded for a while now which happens to be mainly red? I would suppose that is why most of the aid is going there. Not quite the same as BKK might get flooded but hey lets give the aid to them instead? As for the ignoring of the migrant workers that is just wrong but what else do you expect. We in the sunny south are trying to have collections of goods, water, medicices etc to do what we can, guess what we were told? We would rather you sent cash! Amazing Thailand.
